Golden West
Invitational
both pole vault records fall in same
day -
Kira Costa 13-8.5! Tommy Skipper 18-3!
Costa, the California state
champion, broke the GWI meet record at 13-6.25 and then the
national record (13-8 by Shayla Ballentine CA) on successive
jumps. Then she raised the bar to 14 feet, but retired after
running through one attempt. "I was so excited I couldn't
concentrate on my steps," Kira told the San Francisco
Chronicle.
Costa now holds both the indoor and outdoor national records.
Costa told her mother she had to jump good today because her
future coaches (UC-Berkeley) were in the audience.
Skipper, who broke a pole and his hand going
for the indoor national record at the Nike Indoor Championship
in March, opened at 17-1 when two other competitors remained.
Skipper cleared on his second try while Donovan Kilmartin
and Brandon McFarling missed three times. Skipper raised the
bar to 18-0.5 for a new Golden West record and made it. He
then raised the bar to 18-3 to try for a new national high
school record (was 18-2.25 by Eric Eshbach in 1999). Skipper
then missed once at 18-6 and called it a day. He said his
bigger poles didn't arrive in Sacramento, so it wasn't likely
he would make the higher height. They will be with him when
he competes next week in the USA Junior Nationals at Stanford.
It was the third straight meet Skipper moved the bar up a
foot after his opening clearance. "You either make it
or you don't, so you might as well go for it," Skipper
said.
Tommy now joins his older brother Art Skipper Jr as national
record holders. Art Jr, who died last year when the small
airplane he was flying crashed, still holds the national high
school javelin record at 259-10. "I've been waiting to
get this record for my brother," Skipper said. He was
also very pleased he got the record on Father's Day with his
dad, mom, and sister in attendance.

Highlights
- B-Mile: Bobby Curtis 4:07.06,
catching Carl Moe 4:10.41 on the far turn after Moe hit
the bell with a big lead before Curtis ripped a 57-second
last quarter mile. Moe set all the pace at 63 seconds, 2:04
and 3:07. Curtis was running in second and had gapped the
rest. Fast closing Mead WA sophomore Laef Barnes 4:10.90
almost caught Moe, who graduated the night before and just
flew to Sacramento today.
- G-3200: Zoe Nelson MT 10:25.06,
who set all the pace, lost the lead twice and regained it
twice in a 69-second last lap. First Claire Rethmeier CA
and then Rachel Collins TX took the lead from Nelson, only
to have the Foot Locker national cross country champion
bounce back in front. "She doesn't usually get this
kind of competition," Zoe's dad Bill Nelson said, but
Zoe the Zephyr simply refused to lose.
- G-4x100: Poly Long Beach CA
45.43. Shalonda Solomon
anchored this race and earlier doubled into a headwind
in 11.47 -1.3 and 23.08 -0.5 in a warmup for USA Junior
Nationals next weekend.
- B-4x100: Olympia FL
40.39, completing an unbeaten season for the Florida champs
in a season-best time. Olympia is a new school near DisneyWorld
with only junior and senior classes. They are coached by
Leonard Malech, who coached in Brooklyn NY for 33 years
before "retiring to Florida."

- Glenville OH boys 1:28.95 800 SMR, breaking
the national record of Wheeler GA (1:29.68 in March 2003)
and fulfilling their expectations “to do something
big.". Theodore Ginn anchored this
effort, and then upset Kerron Clement and Jason Richardson,
ranked 1-2 in the country, in the 110m hurdles in 13.62.
- Red Bank NJ girls 11:37.86 DMR for a
new national record, breaking the 11:41.28 standard of the
Ale Barrientos-led San Lorenzo Valley CA team at the Penn
Relays in 2000.
- Ari Lambie humbles "the best girls
mile field ever" in 4:39.05, a meet record and the
3rd best ever by US high school girls, with a 10-second
margin over last year's champion, Megan Kaltenbach.
- Sam Vazquez 4:03.87 toppled both Steve
Magness and Chris Solinsky in "the best boys mile field
ever" with a 57-second last lap. Solinsky, who took
the lead on the backstretch, was second in 4:05.30. Jeff
See of Middletown OH was third in 4:06.07, taking
the sophomore class record held by Alan Webb, who in turn
took it from Jim Ryun in 1999. Seven runners ran under 4:08.
- Katya Kostetskaya dominated Heidi Magill,
best in the US the last 2 years, to win the girls 800m in
2:05.95, best in the US this year.
- Shana Cox doubled 200/400 over stellar
fields in 23.24 and 52.94.
- Ohio 800m champion Derrick Hoye 1:50.34
hammered the field throughout and held off the late charge
of John Richardson 1:50.67.
- Skyline Dallas girls 3:38.35 4x400 beat
Miami Northwestern by 8 seconds and became the first Texas
team to run under 3:40.
- Winslow NJ boys 3:10.47 won the 4x400
with a fabulous anchor by Antraye Miles coming from third
place for their third relay win of the meet ( 1:24.49 4x200
and 40.92 4x100).
- Scott Sellers TX edged Mike Morrison
in high jump by clearing 7-3.25 on his first try.
Morrison made it on his second try, and both missed three
times at 7-5.
- Andy Fryman completed a throws double
by winning the discus at 192-6. He won the shot put Friday
night at 65-6.25.
- 4xMile - In the cool of Saturday morning,
early rising runners competed in the rarely run 4xMile relays.
The winners were Davidson Hilliard OH boys,
despite Steve Magness' 4:06.7 anchor split for FMR Klein
TX. Magness got the stick in 7th place and burned himself
out with 56.5 first lap that carried him into third place.
But he could not catch Davidson's Chris Nichols, who finished
in 4:11.3 to fulfill a seasonal goal of the Hilliard OH
crew. Saratoga Springs NY, despite missing
Nicole Blood due to a hamstring injury, won the girls race
easily.. steveu's

After 13 years, AOC has become
the biggest post-season meet, with the most entries (nearly
2,000 this year) and the most events. The meet managers,
the National Scholastic Sports Foundation, bill AOC as "the
nation's premier high school outdoor event." US#1 bragging
rights and even national records will be on the line this
year. AOC

State Meet preview - by Rich Gonzalez. Can it be the
best ever? Certainly is on the girls side. Here's what Rich
has to say: "The meet will be a dandy, with national
record assaults in the girls 4x100, 4x400, 100, (not the
200, that 22.11A is safe), HJ, PV and DT. Also features
what might be the deepest 3200m boys pre-state meet field
in California history, with 15 kids at sub-9:09.99 (I thought
Arcadia was over already!)." - Heat
Sheets
- 1981
California State Meet remembered - For year to be the
best ever, it has to beat the 1981 meet, which saw 5 national
records and 12 state records. Rich Gonzalez story.
- Southern
Section: "Allyson Felix Fastest of Fast"
- First came a monster anchor leg in the girls'
400-meter relay. That was followed by a winning time in
the 100 that tied for the fifth fastest ever run by a U.S.
high school girl under any conditions. And then came a win
in the 200 with a time that was the fifth fastest ever run
under any conditions. Not a bad evening's work for Allyson
Felix of North Hills L.A. Baptist in the Southern Section
