After winning the Nike Indoor Championship 60m hurdles in March, Kerron Clement announced his goal for the year: new US high school records for both 300m and 400m hurdles. He took a big step in that direction with his 35.42 victory in the Texas 5A regionals. That was the US#3 all time performance, just 0.10 behind the record (35.32 George Porter 1985).

Clement already holds the US#2 all time mark at 400H, having beaten Kenneth Ferguson last summer in 49.77 a week after Ferguson set the record of 49.38 at the World Junior Championships in Jamaica.

"I think I'll just bask in this a while," Ari Lambie said after winning the Penn Relays mile in stunning style in 4:42.21. A reporter had asked if she would set a new season goal, now that her original goal of 4:45 had been blown away. Also blown away was a venerable Penn Relays record of 4:49.2 set by then-freshman Kim Gallagher in 1979 (Penn ran 1500 meters instead of a mile from 1980 to 1997).

If Lambie really wants some new goals, she could look up Kim Gallagher's other records. The Pennsylvanian, who died several months ago of cancer, holds the US high school records at 800m (2:00.07) and 1500m (4:16.6) and is second in the mile (4:36.94). Lambie expects to run the mile at AOC Raleigh and the 1500 at the USA Junior Nationals at Stanford.

In her basking mood for the moment, though, Lambie noted that fellow Stanford-bound Amanda and Katy Trotter led Red Bank NJ to victory in the distance medley just before Lambie's mile. "I think we represented Stanford pretty well."
