the dominant high school track and field athletes of 2001-2002

Selection Factors

Nike AOY Selection Criteria

There were 17 boys and 16 girls selected as Nike Athletes of the Year. We considered three factors:

  • National rank in DyeStat Elite, which includes the standard National Federation events,
  • All time rank (according to Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK annual), and
  • Championships won.
Most important championships are six "national" meets: USA Junior Nationals, adidas Outdoor Championships (AOC Raleigh), Golden West Invitational, Nike Indoor Classic, National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NSIC New York), and the Foot Locker Cross Country national finals.
Other championships considered were the following "significant" meets: Arcadia, Foot Locker regionals, Penn Relays, Great Southwest, Texas Relays, Simplot, Millrose Games, Mt. SAC Relays, the Bahamas Pre-World meet, and the USATF and AAU Junior Olympics.

Nike Athletes of the Year meet one of three tests:

A. US#1 ranked in DyeStat Elite and a national championship winner.

B. US#1 ranked in DyeStat Elite plus an all-time top 10 performance or multiple significant championships.

C. An all-time top 10 performance or multiple championships including at least one national championship.

One exception was made. Erika Odlaug's 17th in the World Cross Country Championships was the best showing by an American junior woman in that meet in 10 years, and that earned her an AOY award. Like most of the US juniors, the long training for the USA Winter XC Nationals and the World Cross left Erika tired and injured. Otherwise, she would have been a top contender for outdoor honors.

Our apologies to the many great athletes who just missed for one reason or another, including but not limited to: Jeremy Wariner, Ashton Collins, Liz Podominick, Melanie Uher, Mike Loyd, Jacob Gomez, Noah Bryant, Brian Robison, Ashley Robbins, Ychlindria Spears, Marshevet Hooker, and Michelle Sanford.
