Samantha Shepard was present at the birth of high school girls pole vault, or so it seems. She competed in the women's USA Nationals before she entered high school. She broke the indoor record more times than we can count, including this year. For the second straight year, Samantha chose the New York Armory to set a new record in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships at 13-4.25. The next day, she travelled down I-95 to Landover MD and won the Nike Indoor Classic at 13-1.5, with good attempts at still another record. In keeping with her custom, Samantha's indoor marks were better than outdoors, but she still won the adidas Outdoor Championships at Raleigh at 13-0.25.
