2002 Nike Athletes of the Year

the dominant high school track and field athletes
of the 2001-2002 school year

Andra Manson

2002, Brenham TX

During the season, high jumper Andra Manson could be maddingly inconsistent, missing awkwardly and then soaring over the bar by 6 inches. He did this at Stanford, leading an observor to say, "He could have made 7-6 on that jump!" It was a prescient remark. A month later in Jamaica Manson put it all together at the World Junior Championships. Fourteen straight attempts without a miss, four in the qualfying round and an incredible 10 in the finals. Manson didn't miss until he had the world junior title and the US high school record in his pocket with a 7-7 clearance that would rank in the top 10 in the world for elite jumpers in 2002.
