2002 Nike Athletes of the Year

the dominant high school track and field athletes
of the 2001-2002 school year

Jesse Williams

2002, Broughton Raleigh NC

Jesse Williams was Lou Gehrig to Andra Manson's Babe Ruth in 2002. But for Manson's record season, Williams would have been acclaimed the best high school high jumper in years. From February to July he lived above 7 feet, winning Penn Relays and beating Manson in the adidas Outdoor Championships in Raleigh. Jesse was second to Manson at Golden West and Junior Nationals, and got a PR 7-3 in Jamaica the same night that Manson won the world junior title and broke the US high school record. Jesse just missed the bronze medal on the tie breakers.
