2002 Nike Athletes of the Year

the dominant high school track and field athletes
of the 2001-2002 school year

Richard Smith

2002, South Lakes Reston VA

As a junior, Richard Smith was setup man for Alan Webb's anchor legs on South Lakes' record setting relay teams. As a senior, Smith became a star in his own right. It started out looking like a wide open year for 800 meter runners, with Smith, Will Fitts TX, and Paul Cross FL gjven equal shots at being US#1. Those three came off the turn side by side at the Nike Indoor Classic, and Richard Smith was best. He stayed best the whole year, adding the adidas Outdoor Championships at Raleigh and the USA Junior Nationals at Stanford to his title collection.

Nike Indoor Classic:
Smith beats 5 Paul Cross
and 7 Will Fitts
