2002 Nike Athletes of the Year

the dominant high school track and field athletes
of the 2001-2002 school year

Kelli Burton

2002, Davis UT

Kelli Burton sat down under a big shade tree near the shot put ring at the Golden West with a big smile on her face. She wasn't even winning (because Michelle Carter was also here), but she she had just broken through the 50-foot barrier for the first time by 3 inches. Then she raised her PR again on the very next throw to 51-6, good for 10th on the all time US girls list. Earlier in the year, Burton won championships at Simplot, NSIC New York, and the Great Southwest. Utah State gets her services next.
