2002 Nike Athletes of the Year

the dominant high school track and field athletes
of the 2001-2002 school year

Megan Kaltenbach

2003, Smoky Hill Aurora CO

Megan Kaltenbach bombed in cross country, so after she won the 2-Mile at the Midwest Indoor Classic in Nebraska in February, she told reporters, "That was not me (in cross country). That was my evil twin." From then on, the "good" Megan didn't lose again in 2002. Kaltenbach travelled far and wide in her all conquering march -- Nebraska, Maryland (Nike Indoor), California (Arcadia), Pennsylvania (Penn Relays), California (Golden West), and North Carolina (AOC). Back home, she became the first girl ever to win four gold medals in the Colorado state meet (800, 1600, 3200, and 4x800). The season ended with Megan eager to make amends in cross country this fall. With 24 of last year's 32 Foot Locker national finalists graduated, Kaltenbach will be one of the favorites to make it to San Diego in December, assuming she keeps the "evil" Megan in the closet.
