DyeStat Alums now Olympians


Thirty members of the 2008 US Olympic track and field team came to prominence on the pages of DyeStat since 1999. Here is what they looked like then.

IAN DOBSON - 3rd, 5000m
1999 First OR-WA BorderClash - Stanford bound Dobson is wire to wire winner, first of six Oregon runners to finish before the first Washington runner, giving Oregon a 69-103 victory. (below)
MICHELLE CARTER - 1st in shot put
US high school record holder indoor 54-9.5 and outdoor 54-10.75
2003 Nike Indoor Nationals - indoor record. Michelle said Dad wasn't there because "he wanted me to be on my own, to do my own thing."

RYAN HALL - 1st, marathon
2000 CIF Southern Section - Mt. SAC cross country course record 14:30

SHARON DAY - 3rd, high jump
2002 California State Meet - 1st, HJ 5-11 - tie breaker over Chaunte Howard and Kaylene Wagner.
2002 Golden West - 1st, HJ at 5-10 (below)

BERSHAWN JACKSON - 1st, 400H
2001 Mobile Meet of Champions (below) - MVP; 1st, 110H 14.04; 1st 300H 36.33.
Jackson has the look of the hunter after he captures his second gold medal.
2001 Florida 4A state meet - 1st, 300H 36.12 - state record
2002 US Junior Nationals - 1st, 50.33 400H, avenging loss to Kenneth Ferguson at AOC Raleigh

ERIN DONOHUE - 2nd, 1500m
2001 AOC - 1st, mile 4:42.96 - 2nd AOC title in 3 years - also 2nd in javelin.


DUSTY JONAS - qualified for High Jump in jumpoff
2003 Great Southwest - High Jump 6-11.75, 2nd on misses.

ALLYSON FELIX - 1st, 200m
2001 California State meet - 1st, 100m as a sophomore.
2003 US Indoor Champs, 2nd, 200m against pros, 23.14 HSR
2002 Arcadia (below) - 1st, 100m 11.54 +0.2; 1st, 200m 23.08 -0.1 - Athlete of the Meet as a junior - Felix is smiling as she crosses the finish line. When we tell her it looks like she is having fun, she smiles big again and says, "I am!"

CHAUNTE HOWARD - 1st, High Jump
2001 AOC - 1st, High Jump 6-0.5 - jumpoff over Sheena Gordon

DAVID NEVILLE - 3rd, 400m
2002 Dayton Roosevelt Invitational - (below)
doubles 200m 21.43 - 400m 47.03
Sheena Johnson (Tosta) - 3rd, 400H
2000 Virginia State Indoor Meet - 1st in 4 events, 3rd in another.
Donna on the Side asks the awesome Sheena Johnson how she does it. Sheena says, "I do one event and when that is finished, I move on to the next and don't think of anything else." She said she likes hurdles and triple jump the best.
DATHAN RITZENHEIN - 2nd, marathon
1999 Foot Locker Outdoor - Sophomore wins first of 3 straight 2-miles titles in 9:01.79
2000 Portage Invitational (below) - As usual, no competition inside Michigan
2000 Foot Locker Cross Country - Ritz repeats, reducing Big 3 to one in cross country and leaving Alan Webb and Ryan Hall to look forward to track season.
2001 World Cross Juniors - 3rd - Stung by his loss to Matt Tegenkamp at the US XC championships, Ritz skipped the rest of indoor season to concentrate on the World CC Championships. It paid off splendidly. Tekenkamp finished 5th. He and Ritz were the only non-Africans in the top 13.

ERICA MCLAIN - 3rd, Triple Jump
2003 NIN - TJ 41-8.5, first national title.

GALEN RUPP - 2nd, 10k
2002 Golden West (below) - first national attention for Rupp, finishing 4th in the 3200 in 8:58.11 as a sophomore. Later Rupp travelled outside the country to set national high school records against elite runners -- 3k 8:03.67 in Canada and 5k 13:37.91 in Belgium.

DIANA PICKLER - 3rd, heptathlon
2002 NIN - Pickler twins of Texas finish one point apart in pentathlon, with Diana edging Julie 3,641 to 3,640 on 0.58 win in 800 for US#5 and US#6 all time performances.

WALLACE SPEARMON - 3rd, 200m
2003 NIN - 5th, 200m 22.70
Pete Cava profile on son and dad, Wallace Spearmon Sr., who won 200 at 1987 Pan American Games.
SANYA RICHARDS - 1st, 400m
2001 Florida 3A Statemeet (below) - "Drive for five ends at two" - favored in 5 events but hobbled by injury, Sanya "only" wins LJ and 100. The following year, Sanya has two record breaking days on the national scene:
2002 NSIC - Sanya breaks both 200m and 400m indoor records in 23.22 and 52.10. Her 400m time is faster than NCAA champion the same weekend.
2002 US Junior Nationals - Richards takes high school 400m record from Monique Henderson face to face (50.69) and doubles in 200m (23.31) over Allyson Felix. The 400m time was faster than the senior women's winning time the same weekend at Stanford.
MATT TEGENKAMP - 2nd, 5000m
Blossomed as a freshman at Wisconsin.
2001 Cross Country Nationals (below) - beats Dathan Ritzenhein 24:09.00 to 24:11.10 8k
2001 World Cross - Teg is 5th to Ritz' third.

SHANNON ROWBURY - 1st, 1500m
Shannon rolled to three national class wins in the 800 in 2001: 2001 Arcadia (below) in 2:08.52, 2001 California state meet in 2:10.31, and 2001 AOC in 2:12.00.

JEREMY WARINER - 2nd, 400m
World and Olympic champion Wariner hardly lost a meet since his last high school meet, the 2002 Golden West, and the 2008 Olympic Trials.  The Golden West was a showdown between Wariner (in yellow below) and Kelly Willie, who were Texas champions in different divisions and 1-2 in the nation.  They had to go to Sacramento to settle it and Willie was Number One that day, 45.52 to 45.85

LAURYN WILLIAMS - 3rd, 100m
Williams threepeated in the sprints in the 2001 Dayton Roosevelt Memorial  11.60 and 24.00 MR.


JESSE WILLIAMS - 1st, high jump
Jesse Williams renewed his rivalry with Andra Manson and this time he came out on top with a leap of 7-6.5. In 2002, they duelled three times in the US and once in Jamaica at World Juniors and Manson won three times, including his US high school record 7-7 at Jamaica.
