Michael Carter's girl is on her own and joins dad in the record books

Red Oak TX sr Michelle Carter flirted with the national shot put record all last year and ended up 3rd on the all time list at 53-3.75. Now, she set a US indoor record, squeezing by the old record (53-11 Laura Gerraughty 2001) by three-fourths of an inch on her third throw and smashing it on her last throw with a mark of 16.70 meters or 54-9.5. That's two national shot put records in the family. Her dad Michael's throw of 81-3.5 at the Golden West Invitational in 1979 may be the most untouchable record in the prep books.

Michelle Carter’s determined to be her own person, and escape all the shadows, even if her father, Michael Carter, happens to be the greatest male scholastic shot putter the nation has ever seen – or may ever see – with a mighty U.S. record of 81-3 ½ that has stood unchallenged since 1979. Oh, and Dad went on to win the silver medal in the 1984 Olympics and take home three Super Bowl-champion medals as a San Francisco 49er.

“But Daddy didn’t want to come to this meet,” said Michelle, after her 54-9 ½ final-round performance had been duly certified and the medal ceremony concluded. “He wanted me to be on my own, to do my own thing.”

And did she ever, with all six throws topping the best mark of 47-9 ¼ by silver medalist Sarah Stevens, a Fort Collins, Co. junior.

Carter’s series for the books: 49-11 ¾, 49-3, 53-11¾, 51-11 ¾, 51-5 ¾ and 54-9 ½,

Closter, N.J.’s Kelly Fazekas took third spot (46-1 ¼) with Tiffany Evans of Dale City, Va. fourth 44-10 ¾.)
