BOYS
It was billed as a summit meeting by the meet management, with the tantalizing matchup of Texas champion Jonathan Johnson, Abilene TX, and Ohio champion Marc Sylvester, St. Ignatius OH. But defending champion Johnson apparently left his peak at the Texas State Meet last month. Sylvester was not seriously challenged after he shot to the lead and blasted through the first lap in 51.0. Sylvester cruised home in 1:48.76, just 0.31 off the meet record. Six more runners had a PR in Sylvester's wake, but Johnson faded from fourth to last place in the seeded section, 8 seconds off his best.

(1408), and Jonathan Johnson (5).

The finish was uneventful for Sylvester, as Trent Riter MN (1004)
edged Hatch for second.

GIRLS
San Francisco jr Shannon Rowbury served notice at Arcadia in early April that she would be a factor at the national championship level. She won Arcadia in a PR 2:08.52, US#1 at the time, and was undefeated through the California state meet in June. She stayed undefeated for 2001 here by the narrowest of margins, holding off Roseau MN sr Adrianne Anderson by the narrowest of margins, 0.01 second. Anderson lunged at the finish and hydroplaned to a stop after a 5 meter water slide on her belly.
