Don't look now, but 2002 Outdoor is here
- We're not ready for this (we haven't even
finished the indoor championships, for crying out loud), but
outdoor meets are already starting in Texas, California and
Florida. How's this for an early barn burner: Evangel LA sr
Jonathan Wade's 10.43 / 20.80 double at the DeSoto

Texas 5A 100 meter champion, was runner-up at 10.60. DeSoto

in the Texas State Meet last year, opened with a 1:56.8 win.

ago, Boys and Girls NY sr Stacey Ann Livingston told
DyeStat to mark down February 23 on the calendar. It is her
birthday and she planned to break 1:30 for 600 meters, eliminating
any ambiguity over the the US record. Livingston ran 1:30.20
December 22 vs. the listed record of 1:30.1h by Robin Campbell,
Eastern Washington DC, 1974. Stacey lived up to her word:
She ran 1:29.69. She now has 4 of the 5 fastest indoor 600

Penn State pole vaulter Kevin Dare dies
- Dare, the Pennyslvania HS state
champion in 2000 and the US junior national champion last
year, fell head first into the box on a miss at 15-9 in the
Big 10 championships Saturday 2/23 at the University of Minnesota
and was dead on arrival at the Hennepin County hospital with
head and neck injuries. A witness, Minnesota assistant coach
Mario Sategna, said, "He swung upside down and sort of
stalled with his jump. It looked like he became
disoriented and didn't know where he was. I believe he thought
he had
cleared the bar and was on the other side of it." The
Big 10 championships were cancelled Sunday after a meeting
of Big 10 coaches, even though Dare's parents, who were at
the meet, urged Penn State coach Harry Groves to go on with
the meet, according to the Associated Press. story

Paul Young pulls Oxon
Hill through
LANDOVER MD 2/19/02 -- Last race, Oxon hill boys ahead
of Suitland by a slim 2 points, Paul Young in third place
on the last turn behind Laurel's Emem Ifon and Suitland's
Timothy Riley. But Young (below) goes 3-wide in
the stretch to beat Suitland (red/white) and Laurel (blue)
to preserve the Maryland 4A-3A championship over Suitland,
54-48, and set off a jubilant celebration by Oxon Hill
athletes and coaches. Young was part of 32 of Oxon Hill's
points as he won the 300 in 34.81 US#9 (a 4A record and
second only to Kyle Farmer's 34.14 in 1A last year), was
4th in the 55m, and helped Oxon Hill finish 2nd to US#1
Eleanor Roosevelt in the 4x200. Ten meet records were
broken for further evidence that the new PG County Sportsplex
is changing the environment for Maryland indoor track
after years in the dark and slippery Baltimore Armory.
|
Eleanor Roosevelt won the 4A-3A
girls title for the 7th time in 8 years, 73-56 over PG
County rival Largo, despite star Tiondra Ponteen's ailing
leg. Ponteen scratched from the 300, missed the 500 (where
she is #1 in the country) because of scratching in the
regional, and was unable to hold off Largo in the 4x400.
Roosevelt is US#1 in both 4x200 and 4x400 relays. |
