95th Millrose Games

2/1/02 at Madison Square Garden, New York NY

Always in the Garden, albeit the third incarnation of Madison Square Garden, the Millrose Games will have its 95th running on February 1, 2002. It is a chance for high athletes to perform on the same stage with Olympians in front of the biggest crowd of the indoor season. The featured high school event is the mile run, with 8 top girls and 8 top boys invited, and there are also relays for high school teams in the New York Metropolitan area. The Games have a new sponsor this year - Verizon Communications - starting a 3-year agreement.

Millrose Mile selection policy

POLICY STATEMENT CONCERNING THE HIGH SCHOOL
ONE MILE EVENTS at MILLROSE GAMES

Two of the Millrose Games featured events are the "JUMBO ELLIOTT ONE MILE RUN" for Boys (since 1974) and
the "GIRLS ONE MILE RUN" (since 1984). Each of these events brings together, by special invitation, eight of the
top scholastic milers in the entire USA...at Madison Square Garden on Friday, February 1, 2002.

These are "scholastic" events, sanctioned by National Federation of State High School Associations, as well as the State of New York, and as such, all competitors must represent, and wear a singlet that so identifies them with, their school.

Our Committee's long-established policy for selecting competitors is based on an individual's "Performance Profile"…consisting of: HONORS WON: Scoring high...with emphasis on winning...in major [interstate] meets;
WIN-LOSS RECORD: How they fared in head-to-head competition with peers; PERFORMANCES: Clockings at a mile [1,500/1,600 converted], and where they ranked on National and Eastern Lists.

We review each potential invitee's array of performances in major meets, beginning last Indoor Season [2001], especially State Championships, the National Scholastic Indoor Championship (Armory), and Nike Indoor Classic (Landover, MD).

Outdoors, we focus on State Championships, along with key interstate meets...Arcadia, Penn Relays, Hartford, Loucks, etc...with particular emphasis on "end-of-season" competitions…Golden West, National Scholastic, USATF Junior Nationals, USATF Youth Championships, Junior Olympics and various state "summer games" (Empire State, etc.).

By early Fall, as cross country gets underway, we have identified two groups:

** Our "A" LIST...those elite 2001 underclass milers ranked by TRACK & FIELD NEWS among the USA's top 10-15; usually sub-4:13.0 (boys) or sub-4:55.0 (girls) for the mile [or 1,500/1,600 converted]. In November, we contact these nationally-ranked milers, to ascertain their interest, availability, and authorization to compete. Upon a positive
response, a Millrose Games invitation is confirmed.

* Our "B" LIST...The top 10-15 returning milers within the East (ME - VA), ranked in EASTERN TRACK…usually;
for Boys: sub-4:21.0/'01 (Indoor) or sub-4:18.0/'01 (Outdoor); for Girls: sub-5:05.0/'01 (In) or sub-5:00.0/'01 (Out).

While we do review major 2001 cross country meets, it should be stressed that winning and/or setting course records at these meets is NOT a significant factor, as often the best 5,000m "harriers" are not necessarily top-quality "milers".

In December, as the Indoor Season gets underway, it's time for the "B" LIST milers to produce--to earn an invitation-
with a ONE MILE performance that ranks them currently "at-the-top" of all scholastic milers from Maine to Virginia.

Be advised that performances in large "traditional" interstate meets carry considerably more "weight" with our Selection Committee than do small local meets; and scholastic meets take precedence over non-scholastic or "Open" meets! These large "traditional meets", in which most of our leading "B" LIST candidates will compete, are attended or monitored by our Selection Committee. Also, a number of these meets are limited to immediate surrounding
states, so please check with each Meet Director to ascertain if your entry will be accepted.

We must emphasize that winning the Mile (or placing in top 2-3-4) at any of these designated meets does not insure an invitation to the Millrose Games. For example, to win the Dartmouth (Boys) Mile in 4:21.2, while four others have run sub-4:18.5 at any of the earlier Indoor Meets, would lessen that individual's chances considerably.

While this "selection" process is far from "fool-proof", it has achieved universal acceptance among the Eastern scholastic track community, and we continue to receive positive support utilizing this method to select our final eight-competitor fields.

Finally, be advised that these are "Invitational" events, and as Committee Chairmen our role is to make selective recommendations to Meet Director, Howard Schmertz. Final choices, and ultimate invitations, are the exclusive domain of Mr. Schmertz.
