Donna On The Side
Great American Cross Country Festival
Charlotte, North Carolina, September 21, 2001

by Donna Dye

Part 1 - The Scene

The great race in cross country is the Great American. Now in it's 3rd year, the Great American continues to attract the best in cross country. This year 616 high school teams participated with 4800 runners--that's a triple increase from the first Great American. This year the sight of the Great American was the Winthrop Farm Meadows, which is part of the n grounds of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, just over the North-South Carolina border. Once pasture meadows for the Winthrop Dairy Farm, today the grounds are a recreational area used for a variety of events including cross country racing.
