Ryan Deak, nationally ranked sophomore distance star from Tallahassee, will sit out the state meet and change schools (from Lincoln to Chiles) next year. His coach and father, Bob Deak, said the decision was reached because of "philosophical differences and conflicting goals and commitment levels" between himself and Lincoln coaches. Ryan has already started a 4-month base period for next fall's cross country season.

One of the great scenes in high school track -- athletes from five classes of schools converge on the University of Texas campus in Austin. No longer held in the football stadium, the meet nevertheless draws crowds of 30,000 to three sessions in the soccer stadium, and it rocks. In 2001, there were 400 DyeStat Elite performances, second only to California among state meets. . . More

Injuries hit California stars Leal and Trotter - The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Arroyo CA jr Yong-Sung Leal, recently on the USA junior national team at the World Cross Country championships in Ireland, is out for the season with a strained tendon in his left hip. The Chronicle also said that Ukiah sr Amber Trotter, Foot Locker cross country national champion in December, has missed most of track season with a gluteal muscle pull and her status for the rest of the season is questionable. The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat said the injury has caused Trotter to postpone a try at the national HS record for 3200 meters (9:48.59 in 1996 by Kim Mortensen, the only US prep ever to break 10 minutes). Trotter ran 10:20.5 in the Ukiah Leprechaun meet in March.

Tubbs out for season
Enumclaw WA sr Alison Tubbs, who was so brilliant last year (10:11.95 3200m winning the Washington state meet and 16:54.9 5k winning the Great American Cross Country Festival), is finished for 2002 because of slow recovery from a stress fracture of her right foot. "She's going to take the season off," father-coach Tim Tubbs, who is also the athletic director at Enumclaw, told the Seattle Times. "She just needs to get her health back and recover and not press her luck." Tubbs is signed to run for the University of Washington next year.

Noteworthy Notes

Michelle Carter 51-10.75 shot put in Texas regional, making her 8th best on the US all-time list. The Red Oak junior also won the discus at 155-11.

Kevin Bookout 70-1 and 203-2 double in Pawnee OK 2A regional 4/27. Stroud OK sr was the only shot putter over 70 feet last year and he is the first this year.
