2002 Florida 3A-4A State Meet

3A Preview

May 10-11, 2002

Boys - Can it live up to the 1A-2A excitement?

Girls - Sprint triple for Sanya Richards?

by Ricky Quintana

Boys

INTRODUCTION
After a stunning 1A and 2A State Championship which lived up to it’s
billing, the 3A state meet may very well up the ante in excitement , records
and depth in fields . The races are competitive from top to bottom and
several events have potential for state and national leading times.

A breakdown of each race and the regional qualifiers.

Region 3 was loaded with fast times in the sprints and jumps which leads me
to believe that their was a strong wind. However, the region is tough and
brings to the table sensational Corbin and Wise. Multi talented Cromartie
and Fox should be up for the challenge. Very likel y that the winner will be
under 14.00.

Boys 110 Meter Hurdles (High)
1 27 Cromartie, Antonio 12 Lincoln 14.50 14.31 10 region 1
1 Fox, Jerome 12 Astronaut 14.39 NWI 10 region 2
1. Corbin, Arsinio (12) (Largo) 13.98 region 3

Neufville comes in with the best time. Not fast enough to be a clear cut
favorite, but it will be his to lose as the next fastest is .8 of a second
behind.

Boys 300 Meter Hurdles (Interm)
Finals
1 77 Leach, Jeremy 12 Fort Walton 39.81 38.84 10 region 1
2 27 Cromartie, Antonio 12 Lincoln 39.08 39.82 8
1. Corbin, Arsinio (12) (Largo) 38.95 region3
2. Wise, Dermillo (12) (Lakewood) 39.31
1 Neufville, Paul 12 Washington 38.05 10 region 4

The always exciting 400m relay will pit Glades Central as the underdog, but
not by much. Expect a lean at the wire for this one as Kathleen, and
Penscola Washington will try to silence the raucous crowd.

Boys 4x100 Meter Relay
Finals
1 Washington 'A' 42.26 41.85 10 region 1
2 Columbia 'A' 42.07 42.17 8
1. Kathleen HS 41.50 region 3
2. Jefferson HS 42.19
1 Glades Central 'A' 41.62 10 region 4

Last year, the team championship came down to this final race with Glades
Central eking out the victory with its strong stretch run to unseat track
and athletic powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas by .5 point with it's victory in
the last race of the night.
This year, Ribault has the fastest time, but there are a 6 other teams in
the hunt. The anchor leg should be a doozy as man child Xavier Carter will
most likely have to bring his team from very far back to have chance. Fellow
soph Mario Hughley of Ribault has the team to compliment his super talent
which should be enough to hold off any challenges.

Boys 4x400 Meter Relay
1 Ribault 'A' 3:16.95 2 10 region 1
2 Columbia 'A' 3:17.04 2 8
3 Lincoln 'A' 3:17.44 2 6
1 Palm Bay 'A' 3:22.31 2 10 region 2
1. Boca Ciega HS 3:20.92 region 3
1 Glades Central 'A' 3:19.80 2 10 region 4
2 Hallandale 'A' 3:20.52 2 8
3 St. Thomas Aquinas 'A' 3:20.53 2 6
Columbia has been the dominant team all season and posted it’s second
fastest time last week at regions. Phil Daniels 1:53 and Robert Cooper’s
1:54 in the open 800m are unmatched by anyone in the field or in the state
for that matter.
This should be a solo effort and very likely under the 7:50 barrier if
Marcus Marshall and Cody Brill can back up Columbia’s two FSU bound studs.
4 x800m
1 Columbia 'A' 8:00.82 7:52.36 2 10 region 1
Very even across the board. Caldwell had the fastest time out of the
regions, but the other regions should not be factored out.

Boys 100 Meter Dash
1 James, Aaron 12 Bayside 10.77 NWI 10 region 2
1. Caldwell, Andre (11) (Jefferson) 10.39 region 3
2. McClellen, Julius (12) (Kathleen) 10.42
3. Gilmore, John (12) (River Ridge) 10.56
4. Marion, Kevin (11) (Dixie Hollins) 10.60
1 Richardson, Corey 12 Booker 10.70 NWI 10 region 4
2 Robinson, Fredrick 12 Glades Centr 10.73 NWI 8

Again, region 3 had some remarkable performances in the sprints. Xavier
Carter has been dominant the entire year and had the nation’s fastest time
for most of the year until Texas’ regionals and Louisiana’s state meet last
week.
He should be pushed in this race as Kevin Marion is a legitimate threat.
Even so, Carter has turned back all challengers in the 200m so far this year
and should be ready to take down his early season best of 21.07.

Boys 200 Meter Dash
1 180 Jones, Kadarius 12 Washington 21.50 21.70 10 region 1
2 280 Hugley, Mario 10 Ribault 22.05 21.99 8
1 Carter, Xavier 10 Palm Bay 21.43 NWI 10 region 2
1. Marion, Kevin (11) (Dixie Hollins) 21.06 region3
2. Thomas, Chasio (12) (Kathleen) 21.30
3. McClellen, Julius (12) (Kathleen) 21.95
1 Metelus, Nekey 11 Fort Lauderd 21.69 NWI 10 region 4
2 Edwards, Robin 12 South Browar 21.97 NWI 8

Super sophs, Xavier Carter, defending 4A sate champ and Marion Hughley,
defending 3A state champ, will see each other many more times in their
careers, but this one should leave one without a state title. The tables are
a little more even in the 400m as only .7 separates these two. Expect a
strong stretch run from Carter.

Boys 400 Meter Dash
Finals
1 280 Hugley, Mario 10 Ribault 48.18 47.47 10 region1
1 Carter, Xavier 10 Palm Bay 48.06 10 region 2

Sam Vazquez will be vying for the rarely seen 1600m/800m state champ double.
I believe he also will run a leg on the 4x800m relay in the early afternoon.
Columbia’s duo of Copper and Daniels have been racing each other all year.
Daniels has run very even in his races( 57/56 last week), but hasn’t been
tested since Bob Hayes in March in the open 800m.
Vazquez has run the 800m very few times, but he should make it interesting
judging from his extremely fast kick in the 1600m. He’ll have to run hard to
win the 1600m title while Cooper and Daniels wait in the stands.
Vazquez wouldn’t run this race unless he believed he had a chance. Expect
the last 200m to be a dogfight.

Boys 800 Meter Run
1 68 Daniels, Phillip 12 Columbia 1:53.46 10 region1
2 67 Cooper, Robert 12 Columbia 1:54.31 8
1 Vazquez, Sam 11 Flagler Palm 1:58.84 10 region 2

The fastest returnee from last year’s state meet is Eric Beights of
Lely(4:16). Vazquez has emerged as the best miler in the state and one of
the best in the nation to unseat Beights as the favorite. Hassen has chased
Vazquez all season yielding only a second in each of his two defeats. AJ
Wilson has run fast in Tallahassee and will have to make the 9 hour journey
from the panhandle.
In the end, Beights is the unnkown factor as he has only raced once in a big
meet, Disney. Yet, before last year’s state 1600m final he did the same and
there he was kicking past everyone for second place. His race schedule was
the same in state xc this season and again ran sensationally being the last
to be broken by Hassen , the xc runner of the year.
Vazquez has relied on his kick and his only defeat came at the hands of
strong kicker Bobby Curtis at Arcadia.
I don’t see anyone in the field taking the pace out hard and Vazquez will
dictate the pace even if he doesn’t lead. Beights and Vazquez will be in it
with 200m to go with their kicks. Hassen’s kick is underestimated and he
could sneak by them if the kick starts with 400m or further to go.
In any event, Moise Joseph 1600m record could be broken by all three in the
fastest field of all the classifications.
Boys 1600 Meter Run
1 165 Wilson, Anthony 12 Pine Forest 4:17.07 10 region1
1 Vazquez, Sam 11 Flagler Palm 4:20.35 10 region 2
2 Hassen, Steven 11 Vangaurd (Oc 4:20.56 8
3 Stewart, Alexander 11 Satellite 4:22.00 6
1 Beights, Eric 12 Lely 4:18.43 10 region 4

Deak is the overwhelming favorite, but controversy at last week’s regional
where he stepped off the track in the 1600m unbeknown to his high school
coach and during the season has soured what should have been a joyous
coronation as the fastest 3200m runner in recent state meet history as a
sophomore.
Hassen will give Deak the biggest challenge despite doubling. He’s the
reigning xc runner of the year and rarely tapers off in his performances in
doubles.
Again, Beights is the dark horse, but Hassen will not allow this race to
come down to a kick. He will grind it out from very far out and there are
only two in the state who can take the unforgiving turning of the screws.
One is in the race, Deak.
Boys 3200 Meter Run
1 60 Deak, Ryan 10 Lincoln 9:19.27 10 region 1
1 Hassen, Steven 11 Vangaurd (Oc 9:28.01 10 region 2
1 Beights, Eric 12 Lely 9:35.21 10 region 4

It could come down to a jump off. Rodriguez and Sullivan are the
co-favorites.
High Jump
1. Rodriguez, Roberto (12) (Boca Ciega) 6'08.00" region 3
1 Sullivan, Rashard 12 St. Thomas A 6-08.00 10 region 4

Three vaulters at 14’6”. Possibly, they could push each other past the state
record of 15’9” set in last week’s state championship by Pelligrino of Tampa
Jesuit.
Pole Vault
1 182 Pea****, Jacob 12 Woodham 14-06.00 10 region 1
2 16 Hurley, Matt 12 Chiles 14-06.00 8
1. Pakus, Derek (12) (Seminole) 14'06.00" region 3

Kevin Marion surprised everyone with hus huge 25’ jumpo at regions. Dermillo
Wise was also jumping personal best. I don’t think the distances will be
replicated here, but these two are well ahead of the rest and should have a
tremendous battle.
Long Jump
1 Colson, Colin 12 Andrew Jacks 24-04.00 10 region 1
1. Marion, Kevin (11) (Dixie Hollins) 25'00.00" region 3
2. Wise, Dermillo (12) (Lakewood) 24'10.00"

Cromartie has been jumping well all season, but was defeated by 15 inches at
his region. Colson was the victor.Marshall had a huge jump in very hot
conditions on an asphalt track. These three should have a great battle.
Triple Jump
1 Colson, Colin 12 Andrew Jacks 43-00.00 48-03.00 10 region 1
2 27 Cromartie, Antonio 12 Lincoln 45-08.50 47-00.00 8
1 Marshall, Brandon 12 Lake Howell 48-07.00 NWI 10 region 2

Stockbarger is throwing farthest and should win this one with his second or
third best throw.
Shot Put
1 Stockbarger, Westley 10 Charlotte 58-04.50 10 region 4

Seaborn, Gooden, Nerdal and Octavien lead the strongest discus field in the
state. It should be an epic battle in the afternoon as these four battle it
out for the inches that could decide the title.
Discus Throw
1 34 Seaborn, Bryan 11 Chiles 176-09.00 10 region 1
2 33 Nerdal, Steffen 10 Chiles 170-09.00 8

Girls

Girls 100 Meter Dash
Sanya Richards will begin her quest for the rare sprint triple. Kareem
Edwards was able to do it in the boys 1A neet this year and Richards will
try to turn the trick on the girls side.
Rich’s time came out of the fast possibly windy region 3. She’s the closest,
but Richards should win her first title of the night.
1 Marcus, Nicole 11 Godby 12.22 12.07 REGION 1
2 Norris, Charlene 12 Pensacola 12.02 12.14
3 Jones, Jian 12 Rickards 12.34 12.15

1. Rich, Devon (12) (Seminole) 11.66 REGION3
2. Pray, Ashlee (11) (Blake) 12.01
3. Pressley, Shenequia (10) (Blake) 12.09
1 Richards, Sanya 12 St. Thomas A 11.65 NWI REGION4

Girls 200 Meter Dash
What a field?! Sanya Richards low 23 from indoors makes her the odds on
favorite. Behind her the fastest 200m field of all the state finals could
see 5 more sub 24.5 times. Look for Alyce Williams to be leading second
wave.
1 70 Clary, Malika 12 Rickards 25.01 24.24 REGION1
2 203 Norris, Charlene 12 Pensacola 24.20 24.99
1 Williams, Alyce 12 Flagler Palm 24.92 NWI REGION2
1. Pierre, Barbara (09) (Winter Haven) 24.48 REGION3
2. Pray, Ashlee (11) (Blake) 24.93
1 Richards, Sanya 12 St. Thomas A 24.05 NWI 10 REGION4
2 Ingram, Tolonda 12 St. Thomas A 25.07 NWI 8

Girls 400 Meter Dash
Richards has the fastest time of the year in the country, 51.68, set against college
runners in the Hurricane Invitational in Miami.
Behind her are formidable competitors defending state champ Williams,
McBride, and Davis. Again, the fastest field of all classifications could have four
under 55. Possibly a first at Florida state meet.
1 Williams, Alycia 12 Flagler Palm 56.96 10 REGION2
1. McBride, Sonnii (12) (Lake Gibson) 55.77 REGION3
1 Richards, Sanya 12 St. Thomas A 54.41 10 REGION4
2 Davis, Lawona 12 Centennial 58.30 8

Girls 800 Meter Run
Valeria Rodriguez has the strength to go with the field after the 1600m, but
does she have the speed. Magloire is in the same boat as she will have to
bounce back from the 1600m final where she will have to hold off Rodriguez
for the state title. Rodriguez will be running close to home and could use
that to her advantage as she is already a great racer and will have the
added incentive of the Miami fans behind her. A great duel between these two
and Magloire may get a slight nod being a senior and having more at stake.
1 56 Magloire, Zita 12 Chiles 2:17.46 10 REGION1
2 54 Hunter, Allie 11 Lincoln 2:18.36 8
1 Rodriquez, Valeria 10 Our Lady OF 2:17.10 2 REGION4

Girls 100 Meter Hurdles (High)
Jenna Utecht brings her show to the state finals for her first state
championship meet. The mutlitalented phenom will vye for the her state
championship title in her second best event. She is the overwhelming favorite
and should add to St. Thomas Aquinas point total. Along with teammate Sanya
Richards, these two could produce some 50 poitns on their own. Possibly
enough too win the championship.
1. Adams, Monica (12) (Largo) 14.93 REGION 3
1 Utecht, Jenna 9 St. Thomas A 14.71 NWI REGION 4
2 Peterson, Cicely 11 Lakewood Ran 14.91 NWI

Girls 300 Meter Hurdles (Low)
Contrene Brown has the top time, but the field has one from each region
under two seconds of her region best time. Could be a closer race than
expected.
1 Smith, Krenishia 12 Choctawhatch 45.07 44.65 REGION 1
1 Floyd, Laura 12 Leesburg 45.19 REGION 2
1. Adams, Monica (12) (Largo) 45.67 REGION 3
1 Brown, Contrene 11 Fort Lauderd 44.19 REGION4

Girls 4x100 Meter Relay
Raines looks like the class of the field and could just run away with it.
1 Raines 'A' 47.70 47.57 REGION 1
4 Bellview 'A' 50.12
1. Winter Haven HS 48.83 REGION3
1 Hallandale 'A' 48.59 REGION 4

Girls 4x400 Meter Relay
Rickards leads the way by a large margin, but some teams will make it
interesting. Flagler Palm Coast has the Williams twins who are both capable
of sub 55 legs and Centennial has defending state champ Lawona Davis who ran
56 in the state final last year.
1 Rickards 'A' 3:50.95 REGION 1
2 Lincoln 'A' 3:58.99
3 Ribault 'A' 3:59.35
4 Chiles 'A' 3:59.95
1 Flagler Palm Coast 'A' 4:00.35 REGION2
1. Blake HS 4:00.55 REGION 3
1 Centennial 'A' 4:01.46 REGION4

Girls 4x800 Meter Relay
Lady of Lourdes Coach Ary Montalvo has his charges running fast the entire
year and dominating Florida competition. Their only test came at the Texas
Relays where they finished fifth. Sophomore Valeria Rodriguez will be
beginning her hefty triple as she is also entered in the 1600m and 800m.
Sissi Infante and Jenny Gomez provide the senior leadership that is the
backbone of the top distance team in the state. All will try to score as
many points as they can to help their chances in the team race.
1 Woodham 'A' 9:44.19 REGION 1
2 Bishop Kenny 'A' 9:51.04
1 Satellite 'A' 9:56.05 REGION 2
1. Plant HS 9:47.85 REGION 3
1 Our Lady OF Lourdes 'A' 9:35.32 REGION4

Girls 1600 Meter Run
The field is the deepest of all the classifications. Magloire has run
sensationally all season with her strong finish and won by a small margin
over improving sophomore Coutrney Hall at their region meet.
Valeria Rodriguez always runs hard and she will take the pace from the
beginning and grind this out. Edmonds has been a force and despite the
slower time at regions in the heat, don’t discount her. Giordano has the
advantage of coming from tradition rich Plant High school which won the
state xc title early this year to their string of state chammpionship
titles. Coach Harrison willhave her ready to run. best chance for the sub
5:00 barrier to be broken this year.
1 56 Magloire, Zita 12 Chiles 5:04.58 10 REGION1
2 251 Hall, Cortney 10 Bishop Kenny 5:05.00 8

1 Rodriquez, Valeria 10 Our Lady OF 5:08.79 10 REGION4
2 Gomez, Jennifer 12 Our Lady OF 5:27.47 8

Girls 3200 Meter Run
This group is evenly matched with no clear cut favorite. Jennifer Gomez was
dominant in 2000 winning the state xc title and going half of the 2002 xc
season before running into a string of poor races. Kelly Marshall could
sneak by with her strong sprint finish as could Karen Edmonds.
1 207 Devalcourt, Trisha 12 Escambia 11:40.90 10 REGION 1
2 127 Miller, Amber 10 Rutherford 11:57.00 8

Girls High Jump
A lot of parity in the field at first look, but Utecht has jumped 5'10". Look
for her to jump well in her home area.

battle it out for the title.
