Kathy Messner recuperating after near-fatal crash - Kathy Messner, 18, National Scholastic Indoor high jump champion in March at Boston (5-9.25) and one of Maryland's all-time great HS track stars, was critically injured in a traffic accident Friday June 26, but she expects to recover and compete again.  Kathy will wait until the spring semester to enroll at Penn State and will red shirt her freshman year, according to a fine article by Sheldon Shealer in the Frederick News Post.  In August, Kathy was recuperating at her Thurmont MD home with only a neck brace and scars on her arm as evidence of her accident.  Kathy is planning her return to action, at least in running events.   "My legs are fine, thank God," she told the News Post.  "I should be able to high jump, but not for a year or two."
5/11/98 Washington County Championships - North Hagerstown sweeps behind Hunter Cross' 40 points and Kari McCarty's 30.
5/9/98 Prince Georges County Championships - Sprint stars lead High Point boys and Eleanor Roosevelt girls to victory.    All-American Ato Modibo ran a PG record 45.86 in the 400, faster than his own state meet record 46.24 set last year. Ato also won the 200 (21.1), but was nipped in the 100 by Cameron Horton of Laurel, 10.4 to 10.5.  Meanwhile, Amber Robinson was overwhelming in the girls division with 11.7, 24.0, and 54.38 times.
5/9/98 Frederick County Championships - Middletown girls win big, Frederick boys edge Middletown - Keith Jenkins wins four (10.4, 50.8, 20-7.25, 44-7.75), Randy Buzzell three (2:20.8, 5:19.6, and 11:46), Natalie Dye two (10-3 PV, 15-6 LJ), Isaac Solomon two (15.1 and 42.1), Erik Necciai two (2:01.8 and 4:30); All-American Kathy Messner injured.
5/9/98 Baltimore County Championships - Woodlawn sweeps - Joel Brown posts 13.8 high hurdle win, Woodlawn girls hit 4 minute 4x400.
5/9/98 Baltimore City Championships - City HS boys end 5-year reign of Mervo Tech; Western's girls cruise.
5/7/98 Howard County Championships - Wilde Lake boys win big; Long Reach girls edge Wilde Lake.
5/7/98 Montgomery County Champinships - Matt McGuire, Janelle Ralph, Hannah Benjamin double.
5/6/98 Anne Arundel County Championships - North County boys, Old Mill girls romp.
5/2/98 39th Zimmerman Invitational - Walkersville - Middletown sweeps behind Derek Dye's triple; Kathy Messner wins 4, including 19-foot LJ battle with Pun Chittchang.
