DyeStat Outstanding Performers
Maryland 1998

Here are DyeStat's selections as the most outstanding performers in Maryland in 1998.

BOYS: Ato Modibo, Joel Brown, Tuan Wreh, Chris Smith, Sheldon Hutchinson, Northwestern-PG relay, Dematha relay.

GIRLS: Amber Robinson, Thema Napier, Meghan Verdeyen, Kathy Messner, Pun Chittchang, Jen Geroux, Eleanor Roosevelt relay, Thomas Johnson realy.

 

BOYS

Ato Modibo, High Point - a tick slower than his sensational four gold medal haul in the 1997 state meet, Clemson-bound Ato still covered himself with glory with state and US-leading 45.86 in the 400 meters and Maryland-best 21.11 (USA 18th ), as well as Maryland second in the 100 (10.5h).

Joel Brown, Woodlawn - state leader and top 20 nationally in both hurdle events (13.90 and 37.33); double state meet champion.

Tuan Wreh, Richard Montgomery - First in MD in triple jump (49-9, US 15) and finished second to national champion Greg Yeldell at Raleigh; second in MD in high jump (6-6); and fourth in Maryland in long jump (23-1.25). Tuan will be a Quaker for Penn next year.

Chris Smith, Long Reach - New state record in long jump (24-4, US 11); fourth overall in triple jump (47-3.5, US 77); double state meet winner.

Sheldon Hutchinson, Gaithersburg - Double state meet champion and second overall in the triple jump (49-6.75, US 17) and long jump (23-10.25, US 37).

Northwestern-PG HS Relay - Their Penn Relays 4x400 (3:14.46) was the season best in Maryland and 12th best in the nation. They also led Maryland in the 4x800 (7:57.10).

Dematha HS Relay - A blistering 4x200 (1:25.50) won the WCAC championships and placed them second in the United States as well.

GIRLS

Amber Robinson, Eleanor Roosevelt – Wrapped up her high school career as undisputed queen of Maryland sprinters, leading the 100, 200, and 400 by convincing margins. Her 11.57 and 23.86 marks were top 10 in the country and her 400 meter time of 54.38 was 13th.

Thema Napier, Long Reach – Best in Maryland in the 800 Meters (2:16.03) and 300 meter hurdles (43.14) and second best in the 100 meter hurdles (14.64). The College Park-bound Long Reach star also competed nationally in the gruelling 400 meter hurdles (1:00.41, USA 9th).

Megan Verdeyen, North Hagerstown – double winner in the throws, and still a year to go. The North Hagerstown junior was the only Maryland shot putter over 40 feet (41-1) and the only discus thrower over 130 feet (131-5).

Kathy Messner, Catoctin -- Despite missing the regional and state meets because of a hamstring injury, Kathy still ranked overall in five events: first in long jump (19-6, US 17), second in high jump (5-8, US 27), eighth in triple jump (36-4.5), tenth in the 100 (12.2h), and seventh in the 200 (24.9h).  Kathy also was the national indoor high jump champion at Boston in March.

Pun Chittchang, South Carroll – Double state meet champion and first in Maryland overall in the triple jump (38-5, US 66) and fourth overall in the long jump (19-2, US 32).

Jen Geroux, Parkville – Double state meet champion and first in Maryland overall in the 1600 (5:06.73) and fifth for the season in the 3200 (11:14.3).

Eleanor Roosevelt HS Relay – double winner in the 4x100 (46.93 Penn Relays) and 4x200 (1:41.19 State Meet).

Thomas Johnson HS Relay – the Frederick school’s hot 4x400 relay team couldn’t win the state meet (2nd to Douglass-PG), but went to Raleigh in June and raced to a Maryland season best 3:53.22 mark in the NSO.
