The 36th running of the National Guard Scholastic Games produced a long, but stellar day of high school track and field events at the Fifth Regiment Armory in Baltimore. At the end of 11 hours of competition, the 1,300 athletes and their coaches, parents, and fans could savor:

Ato Modibo, Maryland's best prep runner, living up to his 1997 exploits by leading High Point to the boys title by winning the 55 meters (6.4) and anchoring victories in the 800 Meter Relay (1:35), and 1600 Meter Relay (3:35.3).
KC Allen (Calvert) setting a meet and state record in the girls pole vault at 10' 6.
Jeff McKelvin (Randallstown) nipping Phil Barrett (Largo) by a tenth of a second in the 55 Meter Hurdles at 7.3, tieing the meet record.
Clear Spring, smallest school in the meet, claiming second in the boys team competition on the strength of two boys--Tim Mason and David Hose. After Hose placed second in the shot put (50' 3.5) and Mason third in the 1500 Meters (4:17.1), Mason ran away from the field to win by 10 seconds in the 3000 Meters (9:18.6) to give the Washington County school 24 points. With no entries in the three remaining events, Coach Scott Hornung and his Blazer team almost headed home, not thinking they had a chance at a trophy (top 3) against the Baltimore, Howard, and Prince Georges powerhouses. Instead, they stayed and cheered as all the other contenders cancelled each other out, and their 24 points held up for second, 1 point ahead of Atholton and 2 points ahead of Wilde Lake.
Elizabeth Seton winning the girls title with 34 points over Long Reach (28) and Damascus (25.5).

Frederick County schools claimed five gold medals:

Erik Necciai, Linganore, boys 800 Meters (2:03.3)
Adrian Ellis, Frederick, boys High Jump (6' 2)
Jared Benoit, Thomas Johnson, boys Pole Vault (11' 6)
Mardy Przywarty, Frederick, girls 55 Meter Hurdles (8.5)
Thomas Johnson girls, 1600 Meter Relay (4;14.2)
