FIT Relays (Friends of Indoor Track)Sixty high schools and 1,000 athletes from Virginia, DC, and Maryland competed in the first big indoor meet of the1998 indoor track season in the Washington metropolitan area. The meet was sponsored by the Friends of Indoor Track, a group that is raising funds to build a badly needed indoor facility for Northern Virginia. All running events were relays and the best races were 3-team fights in both distance medleys. Thomas Jefferson's girls turned in a fast 12:25.6, but needed it to hold off Lake Braddock and Robinson. Paul VI won the boys in 10:39.8, with Lake Braddock less than a second behind and Oakton 3 seconds. The horizontal jumps highlighted the field events, which were limited to one entry per school. Defending National Indoor champion Mike Newell (Potomac) opened his 1998 campaign with a 23-9.5 long jump. The girls triple jump saw a duel of nationally ranked Yolanda Thompson (West Potomac) and Naccole Guinn (Thomas Jefferson), with Thompson's 39-7.5 edging Guinn by 3.5 inches.
