A good group would battle here, led by the University
of Wisconsin's Bethany Brewster (4:20.31), with Alejandra Barrientos
(California prep) 4:45.02 in winning the California State Meet over 1600
meters early in the month. Barrientos moved out at the start, with Ohio
prep Krisin Jumer (Centerville HS) and Virginia prep Kelley Ostott
(Jefferson, Alexandria) ahead at 70.0 for the first 400. At 2:24.8 for
the 800 Bethany Brewster took off, leading past the one lap to go point
at 3:18.3, and 3:36.5 for the 1200. Over the final 200 Barrientos edged
up, and rocketed past on the homestretch during a 67.1 final 400 that
had her win 4:27.78- 4:28.13.
Barrientos' finishing power is probably the most
explosive by a prep since National Mile Record Holder Polly Plumer from
back in the early 1980's, with that 4:35.24 mark among prep history's
oldest standards from 1982. From a 2:30 800m runner last year Alejandra
made amazing improvement under former Oregon prep Coach Rob Collins,
fortunate enough to relocate for business in the Felton, California area
with the time to donate to the prep runners at the local school.
