1999 Junior Nationals

Women's Pole Vault

Some amazing history took place in this Finals event. With the Vault improving so much that it is tough to decide on standards that will hold fields to respectable sizes, there were twenty-six in the field. Slowly working its way up from 10- 10.75, a half dozen from the Western U.S. were over 12-02.5. At misses there in places 2 through 6 were Kathleen Donoghue and Natalie Dennison of Rancho Bernardo HS (San Diego), Brooke Lankhard (Fresno State), Jenni Ashcroft (Nevada/Reno), and Heather Sickler (UCLA). Tracy O'Hara, the defending champ who has had a fine frosh season at UCLA including a runner-up effort at the NCAA meet, and also a Rancho Bernardo grad, cleared 3.92 and 4.10 meters, the latter a winning 12-10.25 vault. We seriously doubt if three girls from the same high school have ever placed 1-2-3 at the National Junior Meet.
