Great Mile at Reggie Lewis Center
A dual meet between Brockton MA and St. John's Danvers MA produced a spine tingling mile between Brockton sr Abdulgani Abdi and St. John's soph Mike Grant, with the two runners circling the oval 8 times stride for stride before Abdi won by 0.2 in 4:23.9h. (from Giles Norton, who says FinishLynx would have shown a closer finish than that).

Factoid:
Alan Webb
is the only non-African in the world junior 1500 meter top 10 in 2001. Webb's American record 3:38.26 (en route to his American record high school mile at the Prefontaine Classic) places 5th in the 2001world junior list.

College Choices
Samantha Shepard to Stanford; Lederman to Yale
Samantha Shepard, who led the charge of high school girl pole vaulters in recent years, has decided to attend Stanford University next year. Shepard was an elite vaulter for Jeff Robbins' Air Time club in Massachusetts and competed in the USA Nationals against women as a 7th grader. Finally a senior (Weston MA), Sam has raised national high school records several times and has been especially dominant indoors, where she holds the HS record at 4.05 meters or 13-3.5 (right) and 5 of the 8 best marks ever. Shepard's Air Time teammate Molly Lederman, Newton MA, has decided to stay on the East Coast to attend Yale next fall. Lederman, whose 13-1 makes her the third best HS vaulter indoors, took turns with Shepard holding the indoor record.

Hawaii Connection

Amber Trotter's victory in the Foot Locker cross country national finals at Disney World December 8 continues an interesting string: she is the third straight Foot Locker girls champion to have won the 3-year-old Iolani Invitational in Hawaii during the season.

In 1999, Hawaii native Victoria Chang won the inaugural Iolani meet and then came to the mainland to win the Foot Locker national finals. Last year, Sara Bei of California took the trip to Hawaii, won the Iolani Inv and went on to an "upset" victory in Orlando. This year, Trotter ventured to the Iolani meet September 22 at Kualoa Ranch (site of filming of Jurassic Park) and signalled she was ready for Foot Locker glory by beating Bei's 2000 time by 22 seconds. The Aloha charm worked again.

Is anyone thinking Hawaii for next September?

This is the 7th "Performance Stretch of the Week" provided by StretchRite, Inc. The series is designed by exercise physiologist Scott Powers, inventor of the StretchRite stretch trainer. "The focus of stretching now is to run faster and jump higher, not just prevent injuries. We see so many athletes neglect their flexibility program which translates into tight muscles. A tight muscle will have a limited range of motion and definitely slows the runner," Powers says.
