29th Manhattan Invitational

Preview

by John Dye

The Manhattan Invitational will host a huge number of top teams and individuals from the Northeast region in its 13 varsity races.

Heading the list is Saratoga Springs NY, the number one girls team in the country in Marc Bloom's The Harrier rankings just updated this week. The deep Saratoga squad is probably too good to lose the Eastern States Girls Championships, run as part of this meet, but there will be two familiar teams giving it a try -- US#19 Colonie NY and Northeast #8 Columbia NY, both members of the same league and section as Saratoga. Two years ago, Colonie scored a memorable 2-point victory over Saratoga here.

The seven boys varsity races are given balanced seeding, so there are no matchups with national significance. The two highest ranking teams are in different races: US#17 Old Bridge NJ in Varsity F and US#21 Bishop Hendricken RI in Varsity B.

Overall, the meet includes 7 of The Harrier's Northeast top 10 boys teams, five of the Northeast top 10 girls teams, 15 of the top 20 New York Class A boys teams in the New York Sportswriters poll, 6 of the top 10 New Jersey boys teams in Conrad Haber's New Jersey Top 10, and the top two Division I boys teams in Massachusetts in The Klim Poll. Individually, there are seven girls and five boys who are listed in DyeStat's Foot Locker Favorites for the Northeast region.
