DyeStatCal Athletes
of the Week
Week of April
10th-16th, 2006
Despite the weather Vaulters
continue
to soar!
By Doug Speck
A bit of the "in and out" weather this season, mostly
"out" up north has pretty much destroyed the early season and much
preparation this spring. In the south there have actually been
some tolerable conditions for practices recently, with the past weekend's
Invitational competitions spread out over Friday and Saturday having
a range of weather that went from some pretty serious showers on Friday
to sunshine late Saturday, so maybe, just maybe, we are turning the
corner.
Week's honorees for DyeStatCal Athletes of the Week Statewide:

Boys - Greg Woepse (Mater Dei,
Santa Ana-SS)

GIRLS ATHLETE OF WEEK - Tori Anthony
(Castilleja, Palo Alto-CCS)
With a series of wins that started with the National
Scholastic Indoor meet in New York in mid-March, the Central Coast
Section's Tori Anthony has added gold medals against top groups the
last two weekends at Arcadia and Mt. SAC. Anthony is building
a strong competitive resume against the state and nation's best,
with her 13-02 win at Arcadia a 2006 National Outdoor Leader. Interesting
that we noted in her last league meet the grouping did not seem to
have the pole vault, so our eleventh grade national leader may be
competing in an event not held at her own immediate level.
BOYS ATHLETE OF
WEEK - Greg Woepse (Mater Dei, Santa Ana-SS)
Greg Woepse (Mater Dei, Santa Ana-SS)
With a series of very, very impressive marks
already during a severely weather-challenged spring down south, Greg
Woepse (Mater Dei, Santa Ana) equalled a personal best at
16-07 in the Mt. SAC relays with his second on misses to Scott Roth,
a mark Greg had cleared in a dual a week previous. His 16-07
is the equal #5 vault in the nation this spring, with his consistency
very
noteworthy
so
far
this
campaign. With
a house full of vaulters, with a sister of note in recent years and
father who cleared nearly a couple of feet higher during his own
impressive career, the family name continues prominent in prep Track
and Field circles this spring.
Athletes of the
Week - Sections Statewide
Los Angeles section
Boys - Joseph Perkins (Gardena) part of a hurdling
duo honored this week from the LA City power, Perkins was 14.59 for
the 110 Highs in the Mt. SAC Relays this past weekend!
Girls - Phylicia Johnson
(Gardena) one of our favorite all-arounders, she placed last year
in the LA City Finals in the 100 and 300 Hurdles, the Long Jump,
and the Pole Vault, taking the short Hurdles and Vault gold medals! Phylicia
was 14.45 in the 100 Hurdles this weekend, the state's #7 clocking
for the 2006 season!
Northern
Section
Boys - Chico's Sam Glusman has put together a
fine spring despite some tough conditions in the North, with the
senior emerging the winner in the 110 Highs at the Woody Wilson Invite
this past
weekend in Davis with a section leading 14.86 clocking.
Girls - Hannah Dillard (Chico) adds to the super
string of distance runners from this area of the state, racing an
11:21.26 3200 in the Woody Wilson Invite in Davis this past weekend.
She add to a glut of Northern stars who can race quality times
at 1600 or 3200 meters, with the area six 1600 runners under 5:17
and four at 11:40 or better over 8 laps.
Southern
Section
Boys - Terry Prentice (Diamond Ranch, Pomona) - The
super hurdler/jumper from Diamond Ranch put together a fine hurdle
double this past weekend at Mt. SAC, racing 13.87 in the Highs for
a lifetime best there, then a 38.16 to take the Intermediate contest
in that meet. He has also long-jumped over 24 feet this year. The
13.87 is the #2 time in the state this year and equal #4 nationally
for the event for 2006.
Girls - Ashika Charan (Claremont) One of
the nation's fine all-around athletes continues to have a super senior
year, with a 19-08 Long Jump and 40-03.5 Triple Jump double at the
Mt. SAC meet. Her 41-05.5 TJ best leads the nation outdoors
this spring, with the 19-08 last weekend the #2 mark in the country so
far outdoors.
San Diego Section
Boys
- Andy Sullivan (Rancho Bernardo) and Ed MacGregor (Mt. Carmel) - two
vaulters this week share the honor, with Sullivan winning on misses
at the Jaguar Invite at Valley Center with both over 15-00. Andy
was 15-01 earlier in the week in a dual. With some good weather
hopefully ahead the two schools who have great tradition in the Pole
Vault should have the duo continue to improve.
Girls - Erin Gillingham (Torrey Pines, San Diego) Gillingham
was a fine 5:01.73 for a full mile in the Mt. SAC Invitational for
fourth place this past weekend. The San Diego frosh star continues
a fine spring.
North Coast Section
Boys - Clinton Hayes (Deer Valley, Antioch) -
Two lappers from the relatively new school in Antioch this week! Hayes
was 1:54.18 for third behind Michael Coe in the Mt. SAC Invitational
two lap event this past weekend.
Girls - Ashley Hodges (Deer Valley, Antioch) - the other half
of the NCS power's two lap corps, Ashley Hodges was a super 2:11.66 for
the two lap event at this past weekend's Mt. SAC Relays after recording
a solo 2:13 clocking earlier in the spring.
Central Coast Section
Boys
- Maverick Crawford (Alisal) - The CCS star made an impressive improvement
all the way out to 46-01.5 in the Triple Jump at the Hampton-Phillips
Invitational to become Section leader and a part of the state picture
in the event.
Girls - Chidinma Onyewuenyi (Oak Grove) - It
was another fine weight double for the senior from Oak Grove in the
weight events this past weekend with personal bests in both the Shot
Put (42-09) and Discus (129-04) at the Hampton-Phillips Invitational
at San Jose CC. She leads the section in the Shot and the 42-09
effort is the #8 mark statewide this spring.
Central Section
Boys - Andrew Pancotti (Clovis East,
Clovis) - The defending Section champion in the Pole Vault is rounding
into shape, with a 15-04 win at the Sanger Easter Classic, a school
record and Section leader in the event.
Girls - Shafter HS has a great tradition in the weight
events, with frosh Anna Jelimi appearing capable of adding to the history
in a significant manner before she is through with high school. She
has a seasonal best of 138-08 with a 133-00 this past weekend at the
Mt. SAC Invitational to place 5th in the Invitational division. She
is the top frosh thrower in the state and among the top 15 overall in
the event statwide.
Sac Joaquin Section
Boys - Ben Nelson (Vacaville) impressed with
a 6-10 clearance in the Woody Wilson Invitational this past weekend
at UC Davis, a big personal best for last year's third placer in
the Sac Joaquin Section.
Girls - 2004 State Meet third placer in the High
Jump, Napa's Susan Jackson, has appeared to have made a pleasant
and
full recovery from serious knee injury
that
took her out of last spring's championship action. It
was nice to see her name in some results this spring, with a fine
5-08 win at the Woody Wilson Invite last weekend in Davis, the Sac
Joaquin Section leader for the year and equal #4 jump in the state
this spring!
