DyeStatCal Athletes
of the Week The sun peaked through a tad up north this weekend for
one of our winners this week, who performed with the best mark in the
nation in his event so far this spring, and another field eventer down
south survived conditions described by her
coach
as
cold,
windy, and rainy to record the nation's #2 mark of the year outdoors
in her event!! We can only wonder what will happen when the weather
settles down and consistent training and competitive conditions prevail! A couple of the nation's top returnees in their event from last year, Zheir Sharif of Franklin in Elk Grove, who trails only Illinois Kali Jackson (Cahokia) (50-09.5 last year) on the national Triple Jump lists of returnees, and Sarah Robles (San Jacinto), who is the nation's #7 returnee back in the Discus at 149-05 from last year, with a mark this weekend that bettered that effort! A couple of supers who bear close watching this spring, and who will add a ton to our viewing enjoyment. Only problem in our eyes is the darn duo signed collegiately out of state, with Sharif at Texas A&M, under Coach Pat Henry, who had the LSU dynasty before moving across the state line, and Robles at the University of Alabama, where the Tide program is led by great throwing Coach Sandy Fowler!! - Link to Robles signing - Link to Sharif signing
BOYS ATHLETE OF WEEK - Zuheir Sharif (Franklin, Elk Grove) One of the top athletes returning in the state for the 2006 outdoor season is Zuheir Sharif (Franklin, Elk Grove), part of a super squad for Coach Norman Miller at the Sac Joaquin school that has the potential to challenge for the State title this June. Sharif is a cornerstone of the team, with the Sac Joaquin Section Long and Triple Jump champ back with a 23-03 best in the one-bound event while winning the section title there. Sharif was second in the State Meet in the Triple Jump with 49-06.5 (49-09.25w and 50-02 into a low pit) bests. The only athlete ahead of him last year statewide was Nkosinza Balumbu of Logan, who this winter was fifth in the NCAA at 53-02.25 for the NCAA Team champon University of Arkansas. This past weekend Sharif headed up to Placer High School for the Sixty-Eighth annual Lefebvre Relays. On a day described by Meet Director Rick Foley as one of only a couple in recent weeks where the sun peeked out behind the clouds in the greater Sacramento area, Sharif shined, bounding out to 50-01, with the local breezes that day having the mark placed on the wind-aided portion of the best marks lists, but it is still the top mark recorded in the nation outdoors this spring season under any conditions! There are a ton of meets between now and June, and with a bit of March, and all of April and May ahead prior to state we are sure that there are some great jumps in the tank down the road! The Sac Joaquin section record, in case you wondered, 51-11 by Joel Smith of Cordova from two decades ago in 1987.
San Jacinto High School in Riverside County has a great tradition in the Boys weight events, with recent decades in the Southern Section dotted with athletes from the school who have been very, very succesful. Steve Fite from way back in 1961 had a 59-07.5 SP best, with Hank Kraychir the 1979 State Discus Champ with 61-08 and 188-07 prep bests before going on to USC, where he still sits #2 on the All-time Shot (66-00.5) and Discus (203-08) lists there with the international implements. Jorge Alvarez threw the discus 166-11 in 1993, with Hank Behrens a 57-02.5 best from 1999 in the SP. The Boys' school lists have some depth! A female charge of the same national level quality has been added to the list of late with the efforts of Sarah Robles, currently a senior at Sac Jac. Last year Sarah was fourth in last year's State meet in the Discus and ninth in the Shot Put, and is back as the #7 thrower nationally in the platter event at 149-05, with a 43-10.5 Shot Put best from 2005 that puts her among the top thirty athletes back in the country. After the recruiting pressure was released as Sarah made a college signing decision to go with the University of Alabama and throwing Head Coach Sandy Fowler, Robles has focused on a big 2006 spring, and it has started that way! Robles was 42-06 and 144-04 in dual action two weeks ago, but in this past weekend's DeAnza league meet #1, under conditions a league coach, Justin Monical from Yucca Valley, described as cold, windy, and rainy Robles improved her seasonal Shot best out near her personal record at 43-09, and lofted the Discus out to a big PR, the #2 throw in the nation so far this spring at 153-09 behind the 154-9 by Ashley Woods (West Oso, Corpus Christi, Texas). There is a good group back from the Southern Section in the Girls Shot Put and Discus this spring, so Sarah will not be given any "passes" to the championship awards stand, so there will be some great Girls' weight competitions during the next couple of months! Athletes of the
Week - Sections Statewide Central Section
Boys - Mikel Thomas (Clovis) had a super day of running at the Arroyo/Azusa Pacific University Meet of Champions cranking a 4:17.05 1600m and 9:12.08 3200m double.
Los Angeles section Boys - Michael Stokes (Carson) was a very fine 22-10 to take the Long Jump in the Long Beach Relays this past weekend at Long Beach Community College. Stokes is part of an excellent Carson squad with a great group of male and female leapers!
Southern Section
Girls - Ebony Collins (Wilson, Long Beach) - This past wekend Collins was 14.01 in the 100m Hurdles, raced on the Wilson 46.34 4x100 relay team that ran without DeAna Carson, and had to squeeze in legs on more Wilson relay winners! The State Champ in the 100 and 300 hurdles, Collins is the nation's top returnee in the hurdles at 40.10, a National soph record, and has an 11.44 best in the 100, while placing second in the World Youth (under 18) Championships last summer in Morocco. San Diego Section Girls - Jameena Hunt (Morse, San Diego) - It was a Morse sweep in the weight events for honors here, with Jameena, the section Discus runner-up last year who just missed out on the State Finals at tenth in Friday's prelims, a nice 134-01 in dual meet action this past week in her area. Northern
Section Boys - Jake Fuller (West Valley, Cottonwood) - The state's top soph discus thrower last year out of the Northern Section, Fuller improved to a fine 170-09 as the wet stuff cleared a tad up north at the fittingly titled, North State Relays at Chico State this past weekend. Girls - Katie Fritzke (Mt. Shasta) One half of the running "Fritzke's," Katie was a fine 11:32.6 in the Piedmont Distance Festival this past weekend for 3200 meters. San Francisco/Oakland Sections Boys - Thomas Dileo (Oakland) - They do run the distance events with quality in the OAL lately, with Thomas an excellent early season 9:25.7 3200m for second in the top 3200m section at the Piedmont Distance Festival. Girls - Anna Li (Lowell, San Francisco) - Anna was a fine 5:10.4 for 1600 meters at the Piedmont meet to lead the area girls over the last week. Sac Joaquin Section Boys - Neelon Greenwood (Fairfield) - Greenwood is a steadily improving horizontal jumper, who has been out to 47-00w in the Triple Jump this season already, with a good 21-04 and 45-07 jump double win in the Bay Area Blast-off competition at UC Berkeley this past weekend. Girls - Amber Purvis (Benicia) - A great young all-around athlete, Purvis was the Sac Joaquin section 200 champ last year as a ninth grader, and was second at 400, and fourth in the Long Jump! At the Bay Area Blast-off, Amber was 25.16 for second in the 200m and took the Long Jump at 18-00. North
Coast Section
Boys - Brandon Adams (San Ramon Valley, Danville)
- Brandon was eighth in last year's State meet in the High Jump,
and was the winner on misses over David Klech and teammate Brandon
Sehpherd at 6-08 this past weekend at the Bay Area Blast-off. Central Coast Section Girls - Khrystal Carter (Vally Christian, San Jose) - The defending State 200 champion is off to a super start in 2006. This past weekend the Texas A&M signee was the winner in the Bay Area Blast-off over 100m at 11.81. Charting the State & Section Athletes of Week!!
