DyeStatCal Athletes of the Week

Week of March 6th - March 12th, 2006

National Record in the multi-events and continued winter national distance domination this week!!
By Doug Speck

The end of the prep indoor season nationally had some great action involving Golden Staters competing unattached, with our Athletes of the Week achieving some truly special honors!

Week #2 honorees for DyeStatCal Athletes of the Week Statewide:

Girls - Shana Woods (Poly, Long Beach)
Boys - Michael Coe (Cabrillo, Lompoc)

Variety is the spice of life, with another fine contrast to event areas in this week's Athlete of the Week honorees.  One sprints, jumps, hurdles, relays, and throws her way to all-time successes in individual and multi-events, while the other works on the distance runs, honed on the fine, consistent conditioning necessary for success in the two, four, and eight lap events in the sport!

Another sterling duo mark our week #2 honorees!!

GIRLS ATHLETE OF WEEK - Shana Woods (Speed City TC/Long Beach Poly)

Shana Woods had her 2005 spring season end in a frustrating hamstring injury just prior to the state meet, with that "down-time" probably assisting somewhat in the long run in her multi-event preparation in events like the Shot Put, with our DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week returning from the National Scholastic Indoor competition in New York last weekend with a new National Record in the Indoor Pentathlon event.  It was a busy weekend of competition for the USC-bound Woods, as she also helped out 1:37.72 (4x2) and 3:42.91 (4x4) relay squads to a second and first respectively, in some of the fastest times ever run in prep history. ,

Shana established a prep standard of 3846 in the NSIC meet in New York two years ago, and she put together a super two days of action this year there in the multi-event with 60 meter hurdles (8.67), high jump (5-06), shot put (33-03.25), long jump (20-01.75), and 800 meters (2:31.84) efforts to total 3924, comfortably taking down her record and showing a sharp level of fitness with her near 400 point victory!  Just missing the prep national soph Heptathlon record outdoors as a sophomore in 2004 with 5052 points, Shana should be one of the leaders in competition to make the US Junior National team (two make the squad usually) this summer for the World Junior (under 20) Championships in Beijing, China - with Stanford frosh Lauren Stewart back at 5333, and Shevell Quinley (last year at Merrill West HS in Tracy and now at Univ Arizona) 5266.  The International "junior age" meets are for those who will not turn 20 during the year of competiton, with Stewart and Quinley both 1987 years of birth (Shana is 1988 and so would be eligible for junior age competition through 2007).  The US Junor National Championship competition is in June in Indianapolis.

The NSIC relay action for the Jackrabbit squad had Shana assisted by a super group of youngsters, with frosh Turquoise Thompson, frosh Jasmine Joseph, and soph Tanisha Hawkins helping the 1:37.72 4x200 runnerup to the super 1:36.41 by James Logan. Poly's 1:37.72 is #8 All-Time US.  In the 4x400 it was Hawkins 57.4, Joseph 55.8, Thompson 55.6, and Shana 54.1 for the 3:42.91, the #5 Prep Time in US History!!

With the great annual cross-town rivalry with Long Beach Wilson and crew, and the local Invitational and CIF Championship action it should be a great year as we move into spring for one of the latest Long Beach Poly stars, this week's DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week, Shana Woods.

BOYS ATHLETE OF WEEK - Michael Coe (Cabrillo, Lompoc)

Our honoree for Male Athlete of the Week is another who showed early brilliance during his prep career in the distances, then was shelved for a good amount of time with a broken leg suffered in basketball before eventually bouncing back with a passion and effort that has been great to observe as he heads into his senior year spring outdoor season.  Michael Coe (Cabrillo, Lompoc) is steadily moving to the "head of the class" in the prep four and eight lap distances, with efforts this indoor season capped by a screeching 8:56.87 two mile last weekend in the Nike Indoor Championships in Maryland.  After a 4:07.30 full mile against the nation's best in Boston earlier this winter, Coe has established himself as the "man to beat" in the four and eight lap events this coming spring season off the two efforts!

The 6'1" 160 pound star ended the Fall Cross Country season with a big move near the end of the December Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals in San Diego, with local star AJ Acosta (El Camino, Oceanside) digging down over the final quarter mile to edge in ahead for the win, with the fast closing Lompoc area star right behind in second.  The impressive closing finishes to his races continued into the winter, with no one ahead of Michael at the finish of the 4:07.30 mile, which closed with a sub 2:02 final 880, and the 8:56.87 two mile last week had his last three laps of the 200 meter facility 34-32 and 30, winning by three seconds over Craig Forys of New Jersey, with the rest of a great field left far to the rear (third was 9:10.02).

The 4:07.30 is the #7 US Prep mile ever run indoors, with the 8:56.87 two mile inside the top thirty ever run by a US Prep athlete!  Both efforts featured the quick close, which should indicate plenty still in the tank for the big contests this spring!

The Associated Student Body Vice-President who is the National Honor Society President at his school is bound for the University of California at Berkeley, with the bay area school quickly building a dynamite distance crew!

Michael is another athlete who makes you rub your hands together in anticipation as we look forward to the spring season, big invitationals and the competitons leading up to the state meet!

Athletes of the Week - Sections Statewide
starting from the north this week (a couple of sections not really into action yet or pretty inactive this past week)

Sac Joaquin Section

Boys - Zuheir Sharif (Franklin, Elk Grove) - dynamite leader of a super Franklin squad, Zuheir was 48-07 in the Triple Jump and 22-10.5 in the Long Jump at the Capital Athletic League Invitational at Bella Vista HS this past weekend.  The nation's #2 outdoor returnee at 49-06.5 from last year, Sharif should be out far over 50 feet soon in his speciality!!

Joe Hartman photo

Girls - Colleen Lenahan (Oak Ridge, El Dorado Hills) the defending Sac Joaquin Section Shot Put Champion is off to a fine start, with a 42-03 win at the Bob King/Don Gilbert Invitational last weekend.  After just missing out on the State Finals last year, Lenahan is off to a fine start towards earning a spot on the awards stand at that competition this June!

Boys - Skyline's Boys Distance Medley group won the San Rafael Twilight Relays competition last weekend, running a fine 11:06.8 and were the winners over some of the better programs in the Bay Area!  Willie Godfrey, Cameron Island, Sean Purcell, and Andrew Sylvester made up the Skyline squad.

Meosha Chase and Dantia Hudson of Skyline celebrate San Rafael Twilight Meet win
and a birthday!

Girls - Skyline broke the Meet Record in the 800 Medley Relay (100-100-200-400) at the San Rafael Twilight Relays over the weekend, racing 1:50.89, the #4 Time statewide for the year.  Meosha Chase, Dantia Hudson,
Ada Nwadugbo, and Whitney Nazel made up the team.

North Coast Section

Boys - Pearson Crichlow (Logan, Union City) the latest Logan star is emerging at a national level in the dashes, finishing seventh overall at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York this past weekend in the 200 meters at 21.96, a time that will mark him among the top fifteen in the entire nation on the "end of season" national lists in the sport undercover.  Pearson also was 7.12 in the 60 meter heats of the 60 meter event in New York.

Donna Dye photo

Simplot Indoor - Logan 4x200 team

Girls - James Logan Girls 4 x 200 meter relay - I know, I know we honored the Logan 400m baton group last week, but will make up for it by honoring two for the award here and the 800 relay is a slightly different event.  The 800 meter relay team of Teirra Ward, Kristina Davis, Tracey Stewart, and Victoria Humphrey cranked a huge 1:36.41 to win the National Scholastic Indoor meet in New York this past weekend, with that clocking the #2 prep time ever!!! Only Long Beach Poly's National Record of 1:35.86 from 2003 is better on the all-time prep charts.  Another great Logan baton performance!!!

Ke'Nyia Richardson (Holy Names, Oakland) - the ultra-cool Holy Names junior continued herself to move up the all-time prep lists, with a 42-02.25 win at the National Scholastic Indoor meet, the #6 prep mark ever in the event, and #3 Californian ever (behind Juliana Yendork's NR 43-11.5 and Brittany Daniels' 43-05 at altitude).  Richardson, also quickly becoming one of the nation's top hurdlers, was fourth in the 60m barrier event in the New York competition in a fine 8.66 (8.63 and 8.65 heat and semi clockings along the way).

Central Coast Section

Boys - Kyle Mills-Bunje (St. Francis, Mountain View) Following in the footsteps (with a pole) of last week's CCS same school honoree, Ben Sitler, Kyle traveled to New York last weekend for the National Interscholastic Indoor Champs meet and the all-arounder emerged fourth in the Pole Vault with a fine 15-05.75 effort against a great field.

Girls - Jeneba Tarmoh (Mt. Pleasant, San Jose) - Jeneba put together an awesome weekend of dash efforts at the NSIC Meet in New York last weekend, pacing herself through the 60 meter heats (7.45), semi's (7.44), and then exploding with a 7.39 for third in the Finals, inside the top twenty in an all-time US Prep history's list in the event, and #3 Californian ever (behind Anglea Williams at 7.26 and Shalonda Solomon 7.38).  Over 200m Tarmoh's 23.66 in the finals is #8 all-time US, and #4 Californian ever behind Allyson Felix, Shalonda Solomon, Jasmine Lee, and Angel Perkins (rather select company!).

Central Section

Boys - Tevin McDowell (Tulare Western) The lastest fine horizontal jumper from a school with super tradition in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, McDowell leads the Section in both events, with a fine 45-10.5 TJ and 21-11 jumps double at the Pioneer Relays at Mt. Whitney HS in Visalia last weekend.

Joe Hartman photo

Girls - Jackie Lewis (Hoover, Fresno) - Another horizontal jumper to be honored, Lewis was 17-10.5 in the Long Jump over the weekend in the challenging conditions at the First Chance Invite, with the Section Champ who was over 19 feet last spring hoping to continue to improve and challenge the best in the state.

Los Angeles section

Boys - Birmingham (Lake Balboa) Boys 4x400 relay.  The San Fernando Valley power blasted a 3:21.5 dual mark with the team we were told missing at least one team member who will scoot them significantly faster!

Nils Nilstrom photo

Girls - Birmingham (Lake Balboa) Girls 4x100 meter relay.  Depth, depth, depth is always the name of the game at Birmingham!  A super group of girl sprinters cranked 48.7 in the short relay the first time they stepped out on the track in a meet this spring, with hopes of going significantly faster and challenging the state's best down the road this season!

Southern Section

Bryshom Nellums to far left in fourth place NSIC 400!

Boys - Bryshon Nellums (Poly, Long Beach) - Fine Poly eleventh grader had another great meet in New York at the National Scholastic Indoor Champs!  His 47.61 for fourth in a classic 400 (top 6 within .59) makes him among the top twenty prep ever in the event and is a California State Indoor record!  He also added a leg on the Speed City (Unat/Poly) team in the 4x400 3:19.31 team that was fourth in the finals.

Girls - Turqoise Thompson (Poly, Long Beach) Part of a super young group who ran for Speed City in the National Scholastic Indoor Meet in New York, Turquoise was 54.67 for second in her race over the 400 meter distance, then added fine legs for the #5 All-time US 4x400 (3:42.91) and #8 All-time US 4x200 (1:37.72).  As one of the nation's top age-group athletes over the last few years, Turquoise has stepped onto the prep scene in fine style already!

San Diego Section

Boys - Alejandro Vargas (Vista) - 800 meter star from the San Diego area opened up at 1:55.84, a significant drop from his 1:57.2 2005 best right off the bat this spring!  In an event that has to be weather affected in preparation, when things smooth out Alejandro should be able to make some more significant drops!

Girls - Sharika Thompson (Helix, La Mesa) The defending Section 100m hurdles champ last year with a 14.52 best stepped out early in dual action with a 14.7 the first week of action, the finest mark achieved from that section at this early point in the season on the Girls' side!
