DyeStatCal Athletes
of the Week The weather is turning ever so slightly to that kind
which will favor a bit better track performances, with a couple of
the best athletes in the state taking advantage of the break from
the pouring rain that has hexed some areas of the state and occasional
wet stuff that has slowed progression in some others parts of the Golden
State. Fittingly, one of our Athletes of
the Week this past weekend during her 1600 meter event had the run
start under dark clouds, then had her run down the homestretch during
the last lap into the sun's first strong rays of last Saturday down
south! The big Stanford and Trabuco Hill Invitationals provided this week's Athletes of the Week, with David Klech (California, San Ramon-NCS) a super weekend of hurdling. Annie St. Geme (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach-SS) was down south at the Trabuco Hills Invitational, with a great four lap 1600m run there followed by a fine 800m race. BOYS ATHLETE OF WEEK - David Klech (California HS, San Ramon-NCS)
As one of the top athletes returning in the State for this spring, it did not take long for the North Coast Section star to get his act seriously cranked up, with some fine dual meet runs and a 14.00-51.60 hurdle double and 6-08 HJ at the Bay Area Blast-Off in mid-March. This past week, after a 47.8 dual meet 400 on Thursday for a warm-up it was off to the Stanford Invitational, with David taking both of the barrier events to the next level. A 14.32 heat was followed with a wind-legal 13.86 final in the 110m Highs, but the 400 meter hurdles, where David's long term future probably lies, truly stunning. David's 50.35 is a California All-Time best, and undoubtedly the fastest prep time run this early in the year in US high-school history. Most ahead of him on the all-time list we recognize as being from US Junior, Olympic Trials, or Summer US International meets, all of which take place in mid-June or later. The National Prep All-Time Best is 49.38 by Kenneth Ferguson from Detroit from 2002 (World Junior Champs in July that year in Jamaica), with only four preps in US History to make it under 50 seconds. We hope David will have a few races at this distance after the regular high school season, and we have learned to not set limits on what he do. David will be in action this coming weekend at Arcadia, and he set a Meet Record there with his 36.28 run last year (the state and national record is 35.32 by Cabrillo of Lompoc's George Porter from 1985). The High's record at Arcadia is 13.51 by Virginia's Ricky Harris from 2000. David will also be in the Long Jump this coming weekend, where he has a 24-07.75 best.
Corona del Mar's Annie St. Geme is the defending State 1600m champ, and she had a best Mile last year of 4:51.00. She did some great relay duty in anchoring the nation-leading CdM Distance Medley team (11:42.07) and 4x1 mile (20:20.38), and had a fine fall Cross-Country season where she led her team to as high as a #1 ranking nationally and participated in the Nike Team Nationals and Foot Locker National individual finals. Still, all of that did not prepare us for what she did this past weekend on the track, where she went right past a barrier or three on the way to her 1600m performance of 4:43.13. In the above-linked interview Annie indicated her purpose in the Trabuco Hills Invite this past weekend was to work on a quick 1200 (of about 3:30) to build some confidence up for next weekend's Arcadia Invitational, but her 73 second close showed a level of strength and conditioning that moved her right up to the elite all-time level both statewide and nationally. The 4:43.13 clocking she zoomed in at during her solo run is #8 on the All-Time California state list (think we called it #7 first time-around). Conversion to 4:44.79 for a full mile puts her right at #30 All-Time US Preps, with most of those ahead of her coming from late May or June championship state or national level championship meets. Annie came back to run a solo 2:11.70 800 later in the Trabuco Meet, indicating a level of speed and recovery from the 1600m that was very pleasing. With months still to go and Coach Bill Sumner a master of the yearly plan, we are sure there is much improvement to come at championship time for St. Geme. Annie is another who will be facing a top field at Arcadia that will hope to push her to bigger and bettter things, with Marie Lawrence, Alex Kosinski, Shannon Murakami, and others poised themselves to race much faster than they have, with the four lap event at the April 8th competition one of many meet highlights. Athletes of the Week - Sections Statewide San Francisco/Oakland Sections Boys - Thomas Byrd (McClymonds, Oakland) a top northern California discus throwers, who has been out to 170-00 this year. this eleventh grader this past weekend was fittingly the Oakland Relays winner at 158-04. Girls - Skyline again the 4x100 team this week
- the Girls a 48.78 run to take the Oakland Relays event. Los Angeles section Boys - Derrick Reed (Carson) Fine long sprinter for the LA City power, Reed was 22.05 and 48.77 this past weekend in the California Relays to win this honor! Girls - Starasia Childs (Carson) One of the jumping wonders on this year's Carson squad, Childs, a sophomore, was 36-08.5 in the Triple Jump to win the California Relays on April 1st. Northern
Section Boys - Josh McOmber (West Valley, Cottonwood) A top hurdler for the powerful West Valley squad, Josh took both barrier events at last weekend's Hornet Invitational at Enterprise HS with 15.14 and 40.36 clockings! Girls - Natalie Hickman (Pleasant Valley, Chico) - Northern Section section led the area charge at the Stanford Invitational in the distances with a 5:08.53 mile clocking. North Coast Section Boys - Jahvid Best (Salesian, Richmond) started
to crank it up at Stanford - He was 10.71 in a Heat of the 100, 10.82
for a win in the Final, and added a 48.79 400m clocking. The
talent this Bay area star showed last summer on the Junior Olympic
circuit is starting to roll into the spring of 2006!! Central Section Boys - Charles Amadi (Edison) took part in a great day of jumping at Tulare Western last weekend! His 48-08 TJ was easily the best individual mark in the section for the week, with a 22-07 only gaining him third in the tough day of jumping against many of the area's best.
Central Coast Section Girls - Sela Paini (St. Francis, Mountain View) tossed a towering 148-04 in a dual during the week and added a 137-07 throw for second at Stanford on Saturday. All of this comes shortly after less than a month's practice off a broken collarbone in basketball, which followed a--------- she's our purple heart winner of the year so far!! San Diego Section Girls - Joana Burkhart (Oceanside) a senior is another vaulter on the rise, with an 11-06 clearance from the last week to add to the mix in her annually fine area of the state in the event! Southern
Section
Girls - Sarah Robles (San Jacinto) had a great weeek of throwing in the weight events. Her best in a DeAnza League meet in the discus was 161-02, a mark that would have been the #7 mark in the entire US at the end of the 2005 season! She added a 43-07 Shot Put, with a couple of months to go in the season! Sac Joaquin Section Boys - Alex Goldberg (Lodi), the senior is working his way down in the 400, dropping under the 49 second barrier during a full weekend at Stanford, placing second in the one-lapper at 48.82 there. Girls - Keshia Baker (Fairfield) is a part of the super long sprint crew at her school, with a great 55.26 400 for second at the Stanford Invite this past weekend, with undoubtedly strong relay duty on the school's 3:54.41 4x400 team which should continue to develop.
