Let's talk about Cinco Ranch

Coach Derks with daughter Brittany

Last Year, Cinco Ranch Katy TX won the Texas 5A State Championship. This year with several returnees, could they do it again? Maybe. Coach Gary Derks says they won States because they believed in what they were doing. "Every day they were committed to giving 100%. That's how we won States. When they believed in themselves, you saw better grades and better performances." Coach Derks believes in being the best all around person--that will develop good character--that's important." He teaches team too.

There was a lot of pressure in 2004 starting with winning the Regions which is no easy task in Texas. Regions was on Prom night. So there was pressure to finish on time. But in the middle of the meet there was a tornado that came through causing a three hour delay and sending the team to a dark enclosed room for safety That experience was a little disconcerting. But the team came through, won Regions and walked into the prom late, but heroes.

Coach Derks sees a great deal of value in national meets like the Nike Indoors. First and foremost, it gives athletes experience against the best in the country. This keeps athletes grounded in the day to day and prevents them from being too wrapped up in themselves. The nationals experience also gives athletes an opportunity to learn how to handle problems, trials and tribulations on the road. Like, this year one athlete had to deal with the aftermath of having his bag with over $1,000 in property being stolen.

Coach Derks has help managing the team from his daughter, Brittany. She takes care of everything. To the team she is "our Brit." Once, when she was being left out of a photo opportunity, the team refused to take the picture by turing their backs to the camera until Brittany got in the picture. Clearly she isn't managing the team, she's part of it.

"Coaching is my passion. The Lord gave me this talent so I have no choice but to do my best" "Seeing a young athlete give everything--that's something that gives me great joy."
