The two oldest marks in Reuben Frank's new compilation of Eastern
States records were set in 1970. They are the boys 4x800 relay
(Roselle Catholic 7:48.6y) and boys shot put (Steve Adams 64-8).
The first is probably out of reach, with Notre Dame NJ top seeded
and US #1 at 7:55.8. But the shot put mark is clearly threatened
by Bayonne NJ sr Glenn DiGiorgio, who has already exceeded the meet
record this season with 65-10, second in the US this year to 2001
national leader Kevin Bookout, 66-3.5 this year in one outing while
he concentrates on basketball.
Boys
Relays - The US#1 team for the 2002 indoor season is featured
in the 4x800 (Notre Dame NJ 7:55.8) and distance medley (Haddonfield
NJ10:25.4). Transit Tech NY, fresh off its 4x400-SMR double at Simplot,
will get a fight in the 4x400 from US#2 Thomas Jefferson NY 3:19.76
and US#6 Camden NJ 3:21.18. Transit is US#6 at 3:20.21.
Sprints - Camden sr Jamar Ervin has been sidelined most
of the season by academic problems, but he is entered in the 55m
and 200m and will be favored if fit and available.
Distance - Cherokee NJ sr Marc Pelerin, who ran the third
fastest mile (4:16.71) way back on December 15, one week after running
in the Foot Locker cross country national finals, goes in the 2-mile
here, with Armory leaders Hakon Devries and Frank Macreery on hand
to make it interesting. Top seed in the mile is 5th year prep Vinny
Ambrico 4:15.41 US#4, who ran in Florida last year and now attends
Coate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut. In the 800 are two top ranking
1000 meter runners -- St. Peter's NY's Fred Acevedo 2:29.56 US#3
and Transit Tech NY soph Michael Webley 2:31.19 US#6 -- along with
Bergen Catholic NJ jr Ken Sinkovitz, 6th in the country at 800 meters
in 1:55.13.
Field - US#3 Michael Morrison 7-1 heads the high jump; he
has cleared 7 feet four times this season. Woodrow Wilson DC sr
Ivan Anderson is US#9 in long jump at 23-0.25 and Mt. Vernon NY's
Jason Ramsey is US#9 in triple jump at 46-9.5.
Girls
Relays - Boys and Girls NY is US#1 in the 4x800 by 10 seconds
(9:10.95) and the DMR by 44 seconds (11:53.0), and US#2 in the 4x400
(3:48.52) - heavily favored here in all three events.
