CA 10/23-24 Mt. SAC Invitational - sensational sophomore Sara Bei, Santa Rosa Montgomery, was queen for the day with a time of 17:05 over a very hilly 3 miles in the 51st Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational.  Fastest boy was Alfonso Leon of Santa Ana in 15:06.   Sweepstakes team winners were the favored Long Beach Poly boys (67), and the underdog University (SF) girls.  University, a California Division 5 school (smallest schools), took it to the big girls with 104 points for a 43-point margin.  The biggest HS XC meet in the country had 88 races with more than 14,000 runners from 725 schools.  At left, Bei climbs deadly Poopout Hill in the second mile with a slight lead over Sara Gorton of Arizona (left) and Lauren Fleshman of California.   10/23-24/1998 at Walnut CA
FL 10/24 - Florida Panhandle Championships - Phillip Laird's course record 15:00 (3 mi) leads Niceville boys (48); Elizabeth Wester 18:27 (CR, PR) leads Florida 2A leader Maclay girls (61) past 6A powers. Marianna FL 10/24/98
KY 10/24 - KTCCCA Meet of Champions - David Christian's meet record 15:19.4 (5k) led Daviess CO (34) to the boys AAA championship of meet sponsored by the Kentucky coaches association.  Sara Graybill, Daviess CO, also set a meet record for girls, 14:19.5 (4k).  Girls AAA team winner was Scott, with 74 points.  Lexington KY 10/24/98
NY 10/24 - Clarence Fall Classic - Joe LeMagna's 16:39 win led McQuaid Jesuit to the Boys A team title.   John Huber, Starpoint, running in the B division, had the best boys time of the day at 16:20.  The host Clarence girls won the Girls A title with 40 points.  Jenny Koeppel, Amherst, won the individual A title in 19:31. at Akron Falls Park NY 10/24/98

MI 10/17 Gabriel Richard HS Invitational - US #11 sr Jason Hartmann (15:19) and so Dathan Ritzenhein (15:20) led Rockford (35) to decisive win in AA boys; Ann Arbor Pioneer girls (23) romped to the AA girls title with a 2-3-5-6-7 finish.  The girls individual winner was jr Andrea Parker, Livonia Stevenson (18:59). NY 10/17 Eastern States - Boys - Warwick Valley made a strong claim to New York’s #1 ranking by defeating NJ’s #2 team (Cherokee), and NY’s #3 team (Chaminade).  N. Miller, Highland Park NJ (12:42 2.5mi). New York 10/17/98
TX 10/17 Texas A&M Invitational - Kingwood swept the Division 1 team titles, the boys by the barest of margins, 54-55 over Lockhart.  The girls had more breathing room with a 79-146 margin over The Woodlands.   Tommy Bonn gave Lockhart a consolation prize by winning the individual race in 15:43.  Shannon Murto, Klein, was the girls champion (11:16). VA 10/10 Bull Run Invitational - Oakton boys (97) win behind 1-2 punch of Daniel Heiner (15:35) and Jacob Frey (15:47). Bull Run Park 10/10/98
NJ 10/10 South Jersey Championships - US #2 Murad Campbell, Overlook (15:51) and Cate Guiney, Middletown South (17:29) were the fastest of 3,714 runners. Christian Brothers Academy boys (58) and Shawnee girls (66) also victorious.  Holmdel Park NJ 10/10/98
AZ 10/10 Doug Conley Invitational - Junior standouts Sara Gorton, Phoenix Mountain Pointe (16:57) and Juan Reyes, Phoenix Carl Hayden (14:40) blistered the 3-mile course.  Gorton won by 43 seconds and Reyes by 37.  Team winners were Scottsdale Horizon boys (77) and Phoenix Desert Vista girls (81). GA 10/10 Gate Petroleum / Georgia Southern Inv. - Junior David Adams of Hilton Head SC (15:44 5K) won the boys race by 66 seconds, while his team ran second to South Effingham, 82-87.    Hilton Head won the girls team trophy with 71 points, while sr Meredith Middleton, Lowndes (19:57) was 43 seconds better than anyone else. FL 10/10 Disney World Invitational - US #27 sr Ed Acosta, Belen Jesuit Prep (15:55 5K) and jr Mason Cathey, Bishop Kenny (19:05) were best runners of the day in a 114-school meet.  Acosta won by 34 seconds and Cathey by 42, each leading their teams to victory in the 4A-3A-2A division.  Belen had 107 points.  Bishop Kenny girls placed 1-2-3-7-8 for a 21-point score.  In the 5A-6A division, winners were: Estero boys 107, Atlantic 109; St. Thomas Acquinas girls 96;  sr Andy McHugh, Lovejoy (16:08); fr Jill Gerber, Cypress Lake (19:15). KY 10/10 Marshall County Invitational - Daviess County KY dominated as sr David Christian (15:43.7 5K) and jr Sara Graybill (14:31 4K) each set course records.  Graybill beat the old record by 28 seconds and the runner up by 52.  Daviess County boys took 5 of the top 6 positions for a near-perfect 17 point score.  In the girls team race, Jackson MO topped Daviess County, 70-78. WA 10/10 Hoquiam Invite - Mountlake Terrace swept the team titles, with the girls led by individual winner sr Lisa Dick (18:40).  Mountlake Terrace boys scored 135 points, but the individual winner was sr Dan Lewis, Inglemoor (15:44). Hoquiam WA 10/10/98
VA 10/3 William & Mary Invitational - Boys A - Oakton VA 197, Gaithersburg MD 209, Western Albermarle VA 209. WA 10/3 Sunfair Invitational - Spokane East Valley girls, Flathead WY boys; Mariel Ettinger, LaGrande OR 17:37; US #14 Adam Tenforde, Hanford 15:00. Yakima WA 10/10/98
TX Roy Helsing Invitational - Lockhart boys (52) beat Kingwood (55) and The Woodlands (92); TexasTrack says it may have been the best meet of the year in Texas.  Tommy Bonn (15:35) paced the winners.   Round Rock 10/3/98
NC Wendy's Invitational  - Raleigh NC Leesville Road swept the team championships in the invitational divisions.  The LR boys beat Watauga 56-70, paced by Jon Bell's second (15:36), but Watauga's jr Ricky Brookshire was the fastest male runner of the day (15:28).  The LR girls (92) were led by fr Laura Hamm's third (18:55), while soph Jenny Darnell, Dobyns Bennett (18:36) was the individual winner.  But the fastest girl of the day was sr Alisha Little, East Burke (18:10) running in the individual and JV race.  Charlotte 10/3/98

NY McQuaid Invitational - Burnt Hills NY (37) easily won the girls varsity AA even though their ace Jalonen Ansku (17:41) finished   third behind Jennifer Handley, Ontario Canada (17:11) and Alexis Lake, Horseheads (17:31).  Aaron Emery, Beaver River (14:49) was the fastest boy of the day. DC 17th Spingarn Invitational - Junior Seid Mohammed (16:52) recorded his third straight  victory to lead Wakefield to the varsity boys II championship, 32-35 over Caesar Rodney.  Yorktown girls edged Wilson, 39-43, but the runners-up got the individual title with jr Martha Buckley (15:38).  Washington DC 10/3/98
NY St. Anthony's Invitational - Neal D'Amato, Xavier CT, was the fastest boy of the day by 33 seconds (16:21); Katie Wrinkle, Patchogue-Medford, was the fastest girl (19:39.8).  Team Winners -  Boys: A3-Chaminade 44, Xavier CT 45; A2-Warwick Valley 32, St. Anthony's 35; A1-Central NH 50; Small-Moore Catholic 46.  Girls: A2-Miller Place 71; A1-Notre Dame KY 59; Small-Cornwall 27. 10/3/98 on Long Island

IL Patrick Savage Invitational - Top five US-ranked Torres brothers lead Wheeling IL (20) to an easy victory in boys white race.  Jorge was first in 14:36.6, only 0.4 seconds ahead of brother Ed.  Peter Schroll (15:14.4) rounded out a top 3 sweep for Wheeling; Maine West (36) won boys red; jr Katie Hartman, Woodstock (14:20.8) won the girls white, with Carl Sandburg (40) the team winner, Wheeling 51; so Lisa Martin (14:21.1) led Lake Zurich (31) to the girls white team title, Chesterton IN 50. NC Greensboro Invitational - Bradshear Wilkins, Hillsborough Orange HS, won the boys championship race in a near record 15:44 (5K) despite 92 degree heat.  Jenny Box, Charlotte Country Day, running in the invitational division, was the fastest girl of the day in 19:20.  Raleigh NC Leesville Road swept the championship division team titles, the boys with a powerful 37 point performance and the girls 118-124 over West Springfield VA. at Greensboro NC 9/26/98
MA Bay State Inv. - Frank Sanchez of Lynn MA VoTech (15:23, 5k), 7th in John Molvar's national top 50 list, won the championship boys race, 35 seconds ahead of 3rd place Dylan Welsh of Saratoga Springs NY (15:58, Molvar 13th); Timothy Curran (15:44) finished second in leading St. John's to the team title with 70 points; after two straight losses, US top ranked Saratoga Springs NY girls got back on track with a 26-point victory paced by Danielle Coon, 2nd 18:23, and Kate Markopoulos, 3rd 18:28.  The individual winner was Julie Spolidoro, Duxbury, 18:16. MT Mountain West Classic -Kalispell MT Flathead boys 49 win behind Kevin Clary 2nd (15:00); Travis Stehman, Kremlin Gildford MT, first individual, 14:56; Kalispell MT girls 76, with Amber Arvidson third in 18:22; Emily Kroshus, Calgary 17:52. Missoula MT 9/26/98.
NH Manchester Inv. - National stars Erin Sullivan and Andy Powell ruled over 2,000 runners - Defending national FootLocker champion Sullivan, Mt. Mansfield VT, broke a course record for the second straight week in 17:42 (5k) - Powell, of Oliver Ames MA, ran 15:56, nine seconds ahead of Neal D'Amato, Xavier CT.  Large school team winners were Fitch CT boys, Central NH girls - small schools: Mohawk Trail MA boys, Oyster River NH girls. NY Guilderland Inv. - Burnt Hills, which handed Saratoga its first loss a week ago, won the Division II girls race handily over host Guilderland, 22-67, led by Ansku Jalonen,17:27 on a hilly 2.74 miles; both teams would have beaten the Division I winner, Arlington; Coleman, Wantagh, won Div I girls in 18:35. BOYS Div I- Seton Catholic 71, Jason Jabaut 15:08.3; Div II - Taconic MA 64, Paul Phelps 15:09.

Four returning FootLocker National finishers -- Sara Bei (Montgomery, Santa Rosa 10th), Lauren Fleshman (Canyon,  Canyon Country 14th), Trina Cox (Santa Rosa 24th) and Allyson Marquand (University, Irvine 28th) -- "are as good a group as have returned in California in a while." Anaheim Esperanza girls, Santa Ana boys rated tops in Division I.  Speck analyzes all 5 California divisions.
CA DeLasalle-Carondelet Inv. - Katie Hotchkiss, Mission San Jose, navigated the 3-mile course in 17:57 for a 17-second victory; University, San Francisco, won the girls team title with 45 points; Eric Chaves 15:54 led St. Francis, Mountain View 67 to the boys team title; Donovan Jones, Livermore, won the boys race in 15:54.
