Torrid race in North Carolina

mielke-lutz-photofinish.jpg (20339 bytes)All eyes in the North Carolina 2A championship were on the torrid battle of Brandon Lutz and Shiloh Mielke.   In the end, Mielke (right) prevailed by less than a second (16:09 to 16:09.8) for his second straight state championship, leading his North Henderson team to a third straight title.   Later, US #15 Brad Wilkins, Orange, won the 4A title in 15:28.

Alabama - St. Paul's Episcopal (Mobile) girls keep string going; Fastest of day:  jr Amanda Bradford, Arab 18:59.47; sr Joseph Carmona, Smiths Station 16:20.40.
Alaska - Darcy Dugan loses to flu and Kikkan Randall (19:07); first loss ever in Alaska for Dugan; Justin Gardner, Service (16:25) is fastest boy. Skyview HS 10/3/98
Arizona - Sara Gorton, Phoenix Mountain Pointe junior, took a wrong turn but still backtracked for a smashing 40-second 5A win in 18:34 on a hilly 3.1 mile course.   Juan Reyes, Phoenix Carl Hayden junior, won boys 5A in 16:05.    Team 5A champions:  Scottsdale Horizon boys 109, Phoenix Desert Vista girls 69.

Colorado - Fastest of day: Jared Scott 15:58; Colleen Blair 18:53 - Bill Michel Ends Season Perfect - Jon Severy Wins Gold for late brother Chris.

CIAC Open  (11/6/98 at Wickham Park, Manchester CT)
Boys - Ren Provey, Fairfield, finished an undefeated season by beating Ethan Kearns, Ridgefield, for the fifth time this year.  Provey's 15:44, only one second ahead of Kearns, broke a 14-year-old course record.  Team winner was Fitch 77 (10-12-13-14-28), with Fairfield Prep 83 (4-8-17-25-29) second.
Girls - Jessica Schenk, Fitch 15:13, also the Connecticut 3200 meter outdoor champ last spring; Fairfield 135 (14-16-19-34-52).
Top 25 individuals and top 6 teams move on to the New England Championships.

Delaware - jr Eric Eckstrand 16:04, undefeated in DE this year, led Salesianum 42 (5th straight, 26th in 30); fr Jenn Kutney sets course record 19:02 in leading Brandywine 39 to 2nd straight title.

Hawaii - James Googe, Radford 15:47; Kamehameha 63; Eri McDonald, Punahou 11:44 (4th straight); Iolani 53
Idaho - Fastest of day:  sr Jed Barta, Bonneville 16:02, jr Robin Witcher, Boise 19:23. A1 team champs: Meridian boys 95, Boise girls 111. Complete results, all classes.  Pocatello 10/31/98
Ilinois - Illinois, home of 7 of the top 17 US ranked boys, had 21 boys under 15 minutes (3 mi) in the Illinois State Meet, led by US #2 Jorge Torres (97 FL #2), who won his third straight Illinois championship in 14:00; the boys AA competition was so balanced that 126 points were enough for Torres'  Wheeling squad to beat perennial power Elmhurst York by five points; in girls, St. Charles won back to back team titles, only the 3rd Illinois team to do so; jr Ann Gaffigan, Springfield Sacred Heart-Grif ran 14:03. Indiana - first state titles for Franklin Central boys and Westfield girls; individual winners were so Aaron Fisher, Franklin Central 15:30.5 (5k) and sr Amanda Bell, Clarksville 14:15.6 (4k).  Bloomington IN 11/7/98
Iowa - Fastest of day:  Boys - sr Chris Francois, Davenport North 15:31, in tight battle with jr Grant Shadden, Marshalltown 15:32, sr Bobby Atkins, Des Moines Roosevelt 15:34; Girls - so Missy Buttry, Shenandoah-Essex 11:47, so Heather Kite, Jesup 11:48.
Kansas - Fastest of day - Amy Mortimer 11:59; Chris Williams, Lawrence 16:32.  3A winner Mortimer and Dodie Martin (2A-1A) became the first four-time state champions in Kansas history; Colleen Winzeler wins 6A in 12:12.
Kentucky - the Daviess County duo of US #13 sr David Christian 15:10.7 (5k) and Sara Graybill 14:36.3 (4k) dominated the individual races.  Top 100 in each class, plus top 250 combined lists.
Maryland - complete regional and state final results of MPSSAA meet
Massachusetts -
Finals - Andy Powell 14:00 (course record) confirms John Molvar's new national #1 ranking with a one second victory over Frank Sanchez in featured race.
Eastern - Boys course record falls twice - sr Frank Sanchez, Lynn Vocational 15:01, sr Andy Powell, Oliver Ames 14:52; jr Snalane Flanagan,  Marblehead 17:20
Central - jr Tim Curran 14:24 leads St. John's 41 to victory and edges jr Patrick Boehm, Wachusett, by two seconds; jr Kate Polizotto 17:06 and Wachuset girls 24.

Minnesota - Staples-Motley boys 27 points is all-time state record; Stillwater slips to third on Kevin Doe's DNF.  Duluth East girls win 7th straight.
Missouri - 4A: sr Mike Krull, Christian Brothers 16:07; Hickman 94; sr Amy Chipman, Blue Springs 18:38; West Plains 59
Montana - Flathead boys (23) won AA easily with entire team in top 20 (1-2-4-5-11-15-19).  The winner was so David Vidal in 14:54, catching US #41 Kevin Clary in the last 200 meters.  Clary faded to fourth.    Amber Arvidson of Flathead set a new girls AA course record at 17:50, beating Heidi Lane of Great Falls CMR by one second.  But CMR beat Flathead for the team title, 54-67. : US #2 Murad Campbell 15:10; Cherokee boys 16:05 average; Christian Brothers HS, 16:50 average for 3.2 miles, with six runners within 2 seconds; Cate Guiney 17:59 (5K); Erin Donohue 17:44 (2 minute margin). Complete Results (32 races). 
New Mexico - Felicia Guliford's 19:35 is best girls time of day and leads Gallup 36 to AAAA title; fastest boy: Ben Ortega, Taos 16:52 (these times are at high altitute).
New York - Results of all championships including the 4-association New York Federation meet.
Federation: Freshman Alexis Lake of Horseheads HS scored an upset victory in 18:10.9, seven seconds ahead of so Danielle Coons of Saratoga, but all else ran to form.  Coons' second place (first in the scoring) led Saratoga to another state title with 48 points (1-2-11-13-21).  In the boys race, US #22 sr Dylan Welsh, Saratoga, breezed to a 9 second victory in  15:38.9; the Shenendehowa boys 63 (4-7-9-10-33) rounded out the trend of favorites. Lake had finished 7th, 17 seconds behind Coons' second at last week's last week's NYSPHSAA class A race; the winner of that race, so Katie Twarig, Colonie, was 22nd today in 19:03;  class B jr Jillian Mastroianni, Sayville, fastest girl last week, did not run.

Public 4A - Bradsher Wilkins, Orange 15:28; Leesville Road boys 43, Watauga 47; Alisha Little, East Burke 18:13; Leesville Road girls 64.
Public 3A - Kevin Crosby 15:55 and Sun Valley boys 96, Fuquay Varina 97; Erin Kelley 19:09 and T. C. Roberson girls 65, Enka 66.
Public 1A: Erik Perkins 16:46.5 (2-time state champ) and Swain County boys 44 (first time title); Jennifer Dimsdale, Polk County 19:42.5 (3-time champ); Murphy girls 51.
Public 2A: Shiloh Mielke, North Henderson 16:09 (2-time champ), Brandon Lutz, Randleman 16:09.8; North Henderson boys 71 (3rd straight title); Diana Henderson, North Henderson 18:56.6; Owen girls 98 (1st state title), Swansboro 100.
Ohio - Top-ranked Cincinnati St. Xavier boys win Big School title after regional upset; Brian Godsey, Cincinnati Lakota East, 15:08, topples defending champion Joe Barnes by 17 seconds.  Cincinnati Colerain girls, with all seven runners under grads, trounced Dublin Coffman 73-130.  Sr Lyndsi Gay, Reynoldsburg, 17:37, was a 10-second winner over jr Jinny Hanifan, Anthony Wayne. Top 15 all divisions.
Oklahoma - Chris McWatters, Moore 16:04; Amanda Jordan, McGuinness 11:44; McGuinness sweeps class 4A team titles.
Oregon - Fastest of the Meet: Ian Dobson, Klamath 16:11; Mariel Ettinger, LaGrande 18:36
Pennsylvania - jr Danny Coval, Council Rock sets course record 15:34.8; sr Liz Churchville, Upper Merion 18:06.7.  Top 25 all classes.
Rhode Island - Jerry Bonner, Cumberland 16:15; Bishop Hendricken boys 65; Rosie Woodford 18:40 and So. Kingston 42. 
South Carolina - Fastest of day: Derrick Wyatt, Liberty 15:00; jr Carre Joyce, Summerville 18:25
South Dakota - Rapid City Stevens sweeps AA titles; so Erik Grumstrup 15:37 (5k); so Jessica Fox, Watertown 14:09 (4k)
Tennessee Fastest of day:  David Dean, Montgomery Bell Academy 15:11, fr Andy Baksa, Farragut 15:28; Christy Baird, Knoxwell West 17:40.
Texas - Fastest of day:  Randy Arias (Fredericksburg) 15:54; Emily Field (Highland Park) 11:40
TX TAPPS - (private and parochial schools) - Jyn Wilska's 17:00.5 led Ft. Worth Nolan to a striking 20-point score (1-2-3-6-8) in boys 5A; Brownsville St. Joseph wins girls 5A; Jamie Hodge, Dallas Ursuline Academy (12:53) is fastest girl. San Antonio 10/24/98
Utah - Fastest of day:  Mountain View boys, Bingham girls win 5A titles; David Danley, Wasatch 15:37.3 and Ilene Dixon, Mountain View 18:15.3. Complete results all classes plus combined. Salt Lake City 10/21/98
Vermont - Defending national FootLocker champion Erin Sullivan, Mt. Mansfield UHS ran 17:36 (3.15 miles) for a 62-second margin of victory; the Essex girls 65 (2-6-14-19-24)edged Mt. Mansfield 67 for the team title on a 15-second margin at fifth place; sr Nathan Shenk-Boright, U-32, was the fastest boy in 16:01; boys team champ was Harwood 92 (5-15-20-21-31).
Virginia - Robinson senior Liz Awtrey 17:59.9 broke Laura Heiners state meet course record by 18 seconds; in the AAA boys race, South Lakes so Alan Webb's kick surprised both Andrew Macleod of Oakton and Daniel Heiner of Centreville in the last 30 yards to win in 15:41.3.
Washington - Fastest of day: US#14 sr Adam Tenforde, Hanford 15:10; so Melanie Frostad, Spokane East Valley 18:10.  4A team champs -  University boys 48; Marysville-Pilchuck girls 127 in a barn burner over Shadle Park 129, South Kitsap 132, and Mead 136.   Pasco WA 11/7/98
West Virginia - Fastest of day: sr Ricky Moore, Wheeling Park 15:57; so Jennifer Davis, Hampshire 18:39.
Wisconsin - sr Liz Reusser, Middletown 14:12; sr Dan Sutton, West Bend East 15:40
Wyoming - Nationally ranked Campbell County girls were easy 4A winners with 35 points (3-4-5-11-12); jr Katie Moon, Evanston 18:37.5, was the individual winner;  sr Morgan McLeland 16:24 ran the fastest boys time of the day to lead the Campbell County boys to the 4A title.
