Torrid race in North Carolina
All eyes in the
North Carolina 2A championship were on the torrid
battle of Brandon Lutz and Shiloh Mielke. In the end, Mielke (right)
prevailed by less than a second (16:09 to 16:09.8) for his second straight state
championship, leading his North Henderson team to a third straight title.
Later, US #15 Brad Wilkins, Orange, won the 4A title in 15:28.

Boys - Ren Provey,
Fairfield, finished an undefeated season by beating Ethan Kearns, Ridgefield, for the
fifth time this year. Provey's 15:44, only one second ahead of Kearns, broke a
14-year-old course record. Team winner was Fitch 77
(10-12-13-14-28), with Fairfield Prep 83 (4-8-17-25-29) second.
Girls - Jessica Schenk,
Fitch 15:13, also the Connecticut 3200 meter outdoor champ last spring; Fairfield 135
(14-16-19-34-52).
Top 25 individuals and top 6 teams move on to the New England Championships.

under 15 minutes (3 mi) in the Illinois State Meet, led
by US #2 Jorge Torres (97 FL #2), who won his third straight Illinois
championship in 14:00; the boys AA competition was so balanced that 126 points were enough
for Torres' Wheeling squad to beat perennial power Elmhurst York by
five points; in girls, St. Charles won back to back team titles, only the
3rd Illinois team to do so; jr Ann Gaffigan, Springfield
Sacred Heart-Grif ran 14:03. Complete results. |

| Montana - Flathead
boys (23) won AA easily with entire team in top 20 (1-2-4-5-11-15-19). The
winner was so David Vidal in 14:54, catching US #41 Kevin Clary in the
last 200 meters. Clary faded to fourth. Amber Arvidson
of Flathead set a new girls AA course record at 17:50, beating Heidi Lane of Great Falls
CMR by one second. But CMR beat Flathead for the team title, 54-67.

4-association New York Federation meet.
Federation: Freshman Alexis Lake of
Horseheads HS scored an upset victory in 18:10.9, seven seconds ahead of so Danielle
Coons of Saratoga, but all else ran to form. Coons' second place (first in
the scoring) led Saratoga to another state title with 48 points
(1-2-11-13-21). In the boys race, US #22 sr Dylan Welsh, Saratoga,
breezed to a 9 second victory in 15:38.9; the Shenendehowa boys 63
(4-7-9-10-33) rounded out the trend of favorites. Lake had finished 7th, 17
seconds behind Coons' second at last week's last week's NYSPHSAA class A race; the winner
of that race, so Katie Twarig, Colonie, was 22nd today in 19:03; class B jr Jillian
Mastroianni, Sayville, fastest girl last week, did not run. |
