March? ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
Talk about talent and excitement -- the longtime self-described "Big
Relay Meet for Big Teams" should be a doozy in 2006! The action
should be exciting in the sprint relays, where powerful James Logan of
the North Coast Section has all-everything Krystal Davis (11.56/23.80),
Teirra Ward (12.36/14.21 HH/43.27 LH), Victoria Humphrey (25.07/55.94),
Jackie Harrison (56.79) and Careese Castle joined by a fine frosh class
in getting the crew out quickly this Spring! Logan sizzled to some of
the finest marks in the nation last year in the baton races and we are
picking them as the state team title frontunner entering 2006! Tray-C
and Brianna Stewart (both 38-10+ talents in the triple jump) head up the
state's best corp of leapers (anyone else with six 36-footers ?). Host
Mt. Pleasant showcases among the nation's finest dashers in Jeneba Tarmoh
(11.61w/11.81) to anchor a crew (which is shorthanded this weekend) will
should be doing major damage by the time more big meets roll down the
pipe in the weeks to come! Fresno Edison has Kyanna Thomas (25.29/56.97)
and leapers Dayna Hill (17-11) and Sherrita Carter (17-9.50) powering
the Central Section juggernaut, with Arroyo Grande's Julianne Alarcio
(sprints/jumps) and Sara Sciortino (41-01.50) and Jennifer Steed (142-02)
leading its throws contingent. St. Francis of Mountain View checks
in as another major player in the field events, with Natasha Barthel (12-09)
and Taylor Franklin (12-06) comprising the nation's finest vault duo,
with dasher Samantha Williams (57.44) helping the team's fortunes on the
oval.
Southern Section
- 4 - Eagle Invite (SS)
Santa Margarita - Meet
Info
The action figures to be hottest on the vault runway, with a nice assemblage
of talent taking center stage. It all kicks off with Newport Harbor
HS vaulter Allison Stokke, who equalled the 10th-grade national outdoor
record at this meet a year ago. Although eventually clearing 13-5.75
later in the season, injury cut the campaign short and she had to watch
from the sidelines as good friend Tori Pena (also here) of Edison cleared
13-02 for the silver medal at the state meet. On the boys' side, Mater
Dei's Greg Woepse 16-00, Murrieta Valley's Myles McDowell (15-07) and
Edison's Aaron Roy (14-07) head up a fine 7-person field. The boys 1600m
is another marquee event, with Edison's Jayson Hayes (4:17.1), Santa
Margarita's Julian deRubira, Murrieta Valley's Mike Munoz and Rancho
Bernardo's Colton Tully-Doyle all courting fine credentials over distance.
Girls distance action figures to have Newport Harbor's Whitney Blue
(4:59.52) and a deep Edison lineup (including Candace Alai, 5:06.72)
against Murrieta Valley's Liana Boucher and a fine developing crew from
Santa Margarita. Esperanza's Emily Dunn (56.77/2:10.17) holds an edge
in the shorter challenges, with Rancho Bernardo's Krista Egenese also
entered. Other leading field eventers here include Newport Harbor's
Bo Taylor (59-05.50/185-09), Murrieta Valley's Matt Lahti and Mater
Dei's Jamie Roth (37-10/120-00) in the throws and Rancho Bernardo's
Kasey Kearin (18-05/37-08.50) in the horizontal jumps

info Quickly catching
on as the early-season showcase on the Small Schools scene, look for
CIF-SS Division IV power St. Mary's Academy to headline the girls' action.
The "Big Four" dash unit returns for SMA, with Arcadia Invitational
200m winner Yasmin Woodruff (11.60/24.01) and long dasher Aunjel Street
(57.08) teaming with Morgan Taylor (12.49) and Erinne Benny (12.02/25.20)
to provide some real fireworks at the Division IV level! Cerritos Valley
Christian's Ashley Campbell (25.46 as a frosh last year) will get a
chance here to see where she stacks up versus the SMA crew. St. Mary's
Academy also has league champion Cenquisha Alexander (17-01.50) touring
through the long jump pits while co-host Oaks Christian has 5-4 sophomore
high jumper Shannon Armstrong leading in that event and Roseanne Fleming
(2:15.93) as a top entry in the middle distances. For the boys, the
action will be hot in the dashes as Chaminade's Derron Juarez (10.82/22.04w)
battles Oaks Christian sophomore Marshall Jones (10.96). Another high-end
talent featured here is St. Bonaventure hurdler Adam Liranzo, who clocked
39.83 to claim the silver medal at the CIF-SS Division IV Championships.

@ Canyon-CC HS Meet
Info An attractive balance of talent
is spread evenly across the entries here, accentuated by a nice sprint
showdown on the mens' side. Junior Paul Ned (10.78/22.08w/22.14) of
host Canyon High and Tran Howell (21.93/49.99) of Los Angeles are among
the state's better speedsters heading into the new season and could
meet in the deuce, while up-and-coming talent Trevor Habberstad (15.01
in the high hurdles and an accomplished youth decathlete) of host Canyon
could show well in various events. Crescenta Valley's Nathan Sellers
was perhaps the Southland's most improved distance runner during the
cross-country season, with the Falcons senior seeking to continued suich
fine strides of progress on the oval. Los Angeles' Howell also is quite
accomplished leaping into the pits, with a personal best 22-11 mark
in the long jump. Agoura's Derek Johnson, a CIF-SS divisional finalist
a year ago, owns a personal best of 161-00 to lead the discus entries.
All-American canddate Shannon Murakami brings unmatched credentials
(10:34.75/4:50.59/2:13.37) among those entered in the distances here
this weekend, with the workhorse standout rated well above all rivals
here. Leuzinger's LaTrice Klyce is the marquee dasher in attendance,
with personal bests of 12.41w and 25.53w. Saugus has a dandy duo lined
up for field events action, with the versatile Lauren Moore (37-3.75w
in the TJ, 17-3 in the LJ, and 5-4 in the HJ) and thrower Jeannette
McConnell (42-2 in the SP and 124-2 in the disc) featured. Burbank checks
in a with fine vaulter in Virginia English, who has cleared 11 feet.

Info Paramount leads the parade of
entries here, with the Division I power sporting a quartet of fine athletes
to lead their presence. Senior hurdler Jeremy Monegan (14.87w/40.05)
is a big key in the team's fortunes, with senior discus thrower Curtis
Johnson (174-03), junior triple jumper LeAndre Herman (44-11.50) and
sophomore shot putter Demetrius Amos (51-00) also making significant
contributions in 2005. The discus competition should be among
the highlight events, with Johnson being challenged by Rubidoux's Eduardo
Garcia (160-03 as the top frosh in the state last year) and Riverside
Poly's Brock Lasky (157-04). In the hurdles, look for Monegan to mix
it up with San Jacinto standout Kenny Shaw (14.60/39.22) and Valley
View's Mike Hernandez (14.80). In remaining track events, Valley View's
Bryan Williams (10.832/22.97w) leads the sprints while rising talent
Thomas Richter (4:20.64) of Serrano and proven stars Ryan Gamboa (1:54.17)
and Albert Davila (9:39.97) from Upland will work out the kinks for
the new year. A sensational women's throws field has been assembled
here, with All-American hopeful Sarah Robles (43-10.50/149-05) of San
Jacinto getting the pre-meet nod over Rialto's Tatiana Clark (40-10
as the CIF-SS Division I runner-up), Chaffey's Losa Akauola (38-07)
and Paramount's tandem of Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (37-06) and Jessica
Jimenez (37-00). On the topic of All-American talents, Serrano sophomore
distance runner Kauren Tarver (4:54.33/2:11.21) recentlty qualified
for the World Junior Cross-Country Championships and figured to be in
action here. Over on the vault runway, Upland's Shannon Moy (10-06)
leads the entries.

Info Oakland area powers Skyline
and Holy Names lock up for a great mano-a-mano team clash here, with
some attractive individuals matchups elsewhere as well. Skyline dash
talent Cameron Island goes head-on versus Jesse Bethel's Bobby Guillory
in a clash between two of our preseason First-Team All-State picks as
they are ecpected to duel in both the 100 and 200. The sprint action
could be at least as hot on the girls' side, where baton squads from
Skyline (48.8 recently in a scrimmage) and Holy Names will clash dash
bragging rights. Holy Names also brings the nation's finest triple jumper
to the weekend party as Ke'Nyia Richardson (42-02.75w, 42-00.75) kicks
off her junior-year campaign in the Golden State's post-Brittany Daniels
era. Richardson (14.22 in the highs) also figures to take on Oakland
Skyline's Dantia Hudson (15.15) are the top hurdlers in the meet! Holy
Names' Rosa Magana (2:13.41) is the top multi-lapper entered here.
