March 4th, 2006 Fred Kelly Stadium in Orange, California will be
the site of the Earl Engman Relays. Originally the Santa Ana Relays,
this is one of the oldest track meets in the state dating back to the
1920’s. This year’s meet will be host to 24 schools. The
meet will see 6 of Orange County’s Preseason Top 10 Boys Teams
and 3 Girls Teams. Boys and Girls will be divided into three divisions
competing in 9 varsity relay events:
Division I Boys:
A battle of 4 of the county’s top 8 preseason teams will take place in
Division I this year. Aliso Niguel (preseason #4) will be led by sophomore
middle distance runner Michael Andraszczyk (1:57.86 – 800m). Mission
Viejo (#5) brings speed to the division with Will Taylor (11.2 & 22.97)
and Kevin Kuechler (OC Frosh/Soph HH Champ). El Toro’s Mitch Allen (39.25 – 3rd
DII CIF & 14.83 – 4th DII CIF) will be one to watch in shuttle huddles
and distance coach Rick Hagen brings a plethora of talent to track in the distance
relays in Anthony Masci, Chris McDonald, Abdow Haji, and transfer Kip Miller
for the #7 El Toro Chargers. Fountain Valley (#8) will be highlighted by Jeremy
Williams (4:21-1600m). The Roadrunners speed into the meet with Alex Moreno
(50.09 – 400) leading the way for Saddleback High. Also competing in
the division will be Warren and Yucaipa.

Division II Boys:
The Division II title looks to go through #3 ranked Cypress. The Centurions
are lead by ¾ of the 4x400 team which placed 5th at last year’s
State Meet, Justin Parga (49.47 – 3rd DII CIF), Clint Parga, and Jarren
Halpin (3rd – 4x100 State). #10 Orange County ranked Spartans of Villa
Park will be lead by sprinter Tim Beisner (11.2 – 100m). Junior Conrad
Wozniak (18th at DII XC State Meet) the top distance runner in the division
should shine in the distance relays for Woodbridge. The Westminster Lions will
brings sprinter Brent Sallee. Century distance junior Roman Pascual is one
of the county’s best kept secrets as he comes off a terrific XC season
which saw him place as the #7 JR at the OC Championships. Also competing in
the division are Mayfair, Orange, Santa Ana Valley, and first year school Segerstrom
(Frosh/Soph only).
Division III Boys:
Division III will show off some of the Orange County’s finest in young
distance running talent. Phillip Brown of Laguna Hills is coming off a cross
country season which saw him post the fastest time of all sophomores at CIF.
Orange Lutheran will be lead by sophomore miler Sam Delgado (4:35 – 1600m)
and sophomore Cameron Everhart. Great Oak will bring Chris Lawson (7th DIV
CIF - 110HH). Also competing in the division will be Beckman, Bolsa Grande,
Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa, and J Serra.

Laguna Hills – Steen Sargent (hurdles)
Division I Girls:
This division will be the first look at the defending Orange County Champions
and preseason #1 Aliso Niguel. The Wolverines are loaded in the distances
with Haley Lawrence as the defending DI CIF Champion for 800m (2:13.5) and
miler Brittnay Bertuzzi (5:10). Alexis Deol (56.74 – 400m) could be
added to a distance medley team which could make Aliso Niguel near impossible
to beat. #4 preseason ranked Mission Viejo brings hurdler Natalie Roy who
finished 4th at last years county championships. Alyssa Brown (5:05 – 1600m)
and sophomore Lauren Medina (2:16 – 800m) should be on display for
the Diablos distance relays. Two time XC National Finalist Crystal Reed makes
her final appearance at the Engman Relays for Fountain Valley. The Barons
also will be highlighted by Lizzy Coe (5:12 – 1600m) and Merisa Nakashima
(58.97 – 400). Erin Albee (59.94) of El Toro adds to the list of sub
60 second 400m runners in the division. El Toro’s Elizabeth Bastos
qualified for DI Finals in both hurdle races last spring. Saddleback 800m
runner Erendira Uriostegui (2:18 – 7th DI CIF) could be seen anywhere
from 200m to 1600m. Warren and Yucaipa will also compete in the division.

Division II Girls:
Woodbridge comes into the 2006 edition of the Engman Relays lead by distance
runners- the Babcock sisters, Jessie and Christine. Jessie (5:02 & 10:53)
returns for her senior season with Christine (5:04) following closely behind.
Preseason #6 in Orange County Cypress returns with Britney Flores (57.12 – 400m)
who finished 5th in DII CIF last spring. Mayfair looks to dominate the sprint
relays with Tiera Hillard, Cyntrail Pierce, and Kristina Rodgers. Century
will lead by distance runners Jackie Castelazo (5:22 – 1600m) and Byonka
Mexia. Yanely Estrada is the premier distance runner for Santa Ana Valley.
Also competing in the division will be Orange, Segerstrom (frosh/soph), Villa
Park, and Westminster.

Division III Girls:
John Zimmerman’s Orange Lutheran comes into the meet once again the favorite
to win the division. Hurdler Heather Gibson (100H - 2nd & 300H - 3rd CIF
DIV) and sprinter Adriana Bracamonte (25.53 – 200m & 58.19 – 400m)
will lead a powerhouse Lancer squad. Great Oak comes to the meet with 800m
runner Lauren Campfield (2:16.55) who finished 2nd in DIV CIF last spring.
Senior Jasmin Day of Costa Mesa could be seen everywhere on the track. She
has qualified for both hurdle races and the high jump in track as well as the
state meet in cross country during her high school career. The division will
also see two of Orange County’s finest unknown distance runners in Jennifer
Bowles of Calvary Chapel and Rocio Pelayo (5:15 & 11:09) of Bolsa Grande.
Also competing in the division will be Beckman, J Serra, and Laguna Hills.
