Leif Arrhenius with Dad, Anders. A national record holder in the weight throw, Leif fits into a family tradition of thowing. Dad Anders was a thrower for Sweden and Brother Nik holds the national high school discus record. Leif is still working on his plans for next year.
Many of the throwers participating in the Simplot Games have the benefit of coaching by former Olympic team members. Here are three: Marc Cardinal (Weight Lifting 1980 Olympics representing Canada); Zbigniew "Bish" Dolegiewicz (Shot Put and Discus 1976, 1980, 1984) and Anders Arrhenius (1976 Olympic team for Sweden). Marc coaches daughter Sarah in the throws and weight lifting. Bish is Athletic Director at Juan Diego in Salt Lake City and a coach with the Old Boys Network. Anders coaches son, Lief and is a coach with the Old Boys Network.
The Old Boys Network. Many of the participants in the throws from Utah are part of the Old Boys Network, a track club whose coaches are mostly over 50--and therefore the name, Old Boys Network. They use the old Brigham Young University Smith Fieldhouse as a meeting place to share their skills, techniques and love of the sport. Bish, his wife Anna and Andres are three of the volunteer coaches. Each coach has a different style so athletes can pick the one that suits their needs and personality. But all provide training in a friendly atmosphere that at least one athlete describes as "awesome."
The Kraychir Brothers of California Trent (l) and Trevor with Dad Hank. These are young throwers with good marks. Trent is an 8th grader and Trevor is in the 9th grade. Both are coached by Dad, Hank who was a high level thrower who participated in the
Olympic trials.
