Girls Mile - Megan Kaltenbach easily

PHILADELPHIA 4/25/02 -- Smoky Hill CO jr Megan Kaltenbach walked off a winner, but she didn't look it. She was disappointed with her time (4:55.84), she was disappointed that Molly Huddle wasn't in the race (after winning the Arcadia 3200 2 weeks ago, Megan said, "I'm going to Penn to run against Molly Huddle.", and she was tired from a cross country airline ordeal that put her into Philadelphia at 2 a.m. ("I never go to bed after 10 p.m.")

"The first lap was too slow," Megan moaned. It probably wouldn't have been if the hard charging Huddle had been there (did not enter). Or even if Melissa Donais, front running winner of the Millrose Games mile, had been there (entered but a late scratch because of injury).

In the event, Kaltenbach settled in with the pack through one lap in 79.8 seconds (above)until her coach screamed, "You're way too slow," from his perch on the first turn. Kaltenbach responded with her customary mid-race surge that effectively ended the race. (below, left, halfway) She ran the middle half mile in 2:19.5 before slowing to a 76.5 last quarter that made the result seem closer than it was, but also made Kaltenbach take a look at the closing runners. (below, middle)

Homer NY sr Tracey Brauksieck 4:56.76 and Hunterdon Central NJ soph Casey Nelson 4:58.14 ran 2-3 the entire race. (below, right)
