from Charlie Zimmerman

In that fashion which is the hallmark of all championship athletes, Louisville Saint X's Bobby Curtis overcame a lingering illness, a lack of training, un-Fall-like heat, and a rain-slowed course to win another Kentucky cross-country championship, setting a new state record in the process.

Curtis, who is still suffering from a "bug" which caused him to miss an entire week of training, won easily in a state record time of 15:06 for the 5000 meters at The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Curtis set the record for the hilly and difficult Horse Park course 3 weeks ago in the Lexington Catholic Invitational with a 14:58, but he clearly did not have that speed today. On the other hand, he was not pushed, leading by ten seconds at the end of the first mile and by twenty-five seconds at the two-mile mark (9:36). He cruised to the finish, winning by 29 seconds over his closest competitor. [Note: state records in Kentucky can only be set in state championship events. Thus, Curtis'15:06 is the new state record although he ran 14:58 in a state-sanctioned meet on the same course several weeks before. The old record of 15:10 was held jointly by David Christian and Thoms Murley (who captained Stanford to its 4th-place finish in the 1999 NCAA Cross-country championships)].

The weather was sunny and almost 70 degrees, forcing KHSAA officials to arrange for a fire truck with a water spray at the finish line. The course was also slowed by a rain yesterday which left the average time for all divisions and both boys and girls approximately twenty to thirty seconds slower than last year. (Curtis ran a 15:28 last year on the same course in winning the 2000 individual title).

Overcoming challenges is nothing new for Curtis, however. His coach noted that Bobby is undefeated this season even though he has run on both coasts, taken on all comers, and overcome both difficult courses and steamy weather.

Curtis, who has been described often this season as the ultimate team runner, was most excited that he lead Louisville Saint Xavier to the state AAA championship. Saint X placed five runners in the top fifteen and all seven of its runners in the top twenty-one in easily winning the championship with 48 points to runner-up Shelby County's 117. Saint X's runners averaged 16:20.9

Ryan Snellen of Shelby County was second in 15:35, followed by Jacob Buckman of Louisville Butler in 15:47 and Isaac LaFond of South Oldham in 16:04.
