2000 Boys AAA XC season: DyestatPA picks Central Bucks East for the team title, and Mount Lebanon junior Shawn Cavanaugh for individual champion, although it's not a slam dunk as with Footlocker Finalist Dan Coval in 1999.

Changing of the guard. Dan Coval leaves after winning four consecutive 3200 and three consecutive XC titles, and opens the top spot to future stars like Sean Cavanaugh, Mount Lebanon.

The top 10 Returnees from last year are Shawn Cavanaugh (11) of Mount Lebanon, Dave Atkiss (12) of North Penn, Tim Erickson (11) of Southern Lehigh, Karl Dusen (12) of Central Bucks East, Bob Boston (12) of Altoona, Patrick Bringardner (12) of Gettysburg, Ryan Sheehan (12) of Baldwin, Eamon Brazunas (12) of Great Valley, Darrell Curtis (12) of Cumberland Valley, and Mike Didio (11) of Council Rock.

Those who had great track seasons who should be considered for the top are Dan Mazzacco (11) of Baldwin, who ran a 4;18 to take the state championship, and Adam Leive (12) of Radnor, who ran a 4:18 to win District One.

A few teams that are being mentioned on the boards are Mount Lebanon, Baldwin, CB East, North Penn, and Cumberland Valley. And despite their loss of quite a few runners, people have said not to count out Council Rock. And they should not be completely disregarded because of their history of success.

The top 10 teams last year were Council Rock(139), Manheim Township(154), Central Bucks East(168), North Allegheny(223), Baldwin(223), Mount Lebanon(226), McDowell(267), Hempfield Area(277), Emmaus(286) and Butler(291).

Of these teams Council Rock has 2 of its top 7 returning,

Manheim Township has 3 of its top 7 returning,

Central Bucks East has 5 of its top 7 returning,

North Allegheny has 3 of its top 7 returning (and a new coach),

Baldwin has 5 of its top 7 returning,

Mount Lebanon has 4 of its top 7 returning,

McDowell has 3 of its top 7 returning,

Hempfield Area has 2 of its top 7 returning,

Emmaus has 4 of its top 7 returning

and Butler has 3 of its top 7 returning.

Of these teams, the ones that have the most promise are Central Bucks East, Baldwin, Mount Lebanon and Emmaus. Although Council Rock can't be counted out even though they only have two starters coming back because their program continuously produces quality teams year after year.

So team predictions for AAA states this year are:

1) Central Bucks East(with 5 starters coming back) 3rd in '99

2) Baldwin(with 5 starters coming back) 5th in '99

3) Mount Lebanon(with 4 starters coming back) 6th in '99

4) Cumberland Valley(with all 7 starters coming back) 11th in '99

5) Emmaus(with 4 starters coming back) 9th in '99

6) Council Rock(with only 2 starters coming back, but they could move up or down based on the talent they manage to draw, and a reported transfer) 1st in '99

7) North Penn(4 starters coming back) 13th in '99

8) McDowell(with 3 starters coming back) 7th in '99

9) North Allegheny(with 3 starters coming back) 4th in '99

10) Perkiomen Valley(with 5 starters coming back) 12th in '99

(But this is based on our opinions of how these teams may fair this year, and predictions are what they are, predictions. The fun lies in guessing who will finish where. So enjoy!)

Individual predictions for AAA states this year are:

1) Shawn Cavanaugh (11, Mount Lebanon) 2nd in '99

2) Karl Dusen(12, Central Bucks East) 9th in '99

3) Dan Mazzacco, Baldwin (state 1600 champion/95th in 99)

4) Mike Didio(11, Council Rock) 25th in '99

5) Dave Atkiss(12, North Penn) 3rd in '99

6) Tim Erickson(11, Southern Lehigh) 5th in '99

7) Bob Boston (10, Altoona) 13th in '99

8) Adam Leive (12), Radnor (4:18 1600 at Districts, 4th at States)

9) Darrell Curtis(12, Cumberland Valley) 22nd in '99

10) Eamon Brazunas(12, Great Valley) 18th in '99

11) Corey Rogers (11) Pottsgrove (40th in 99/9:34 3200,5th at States)

12) Matt Daniels(12, Upper Merion) 28th in '99

13) Ryan Sheehan(12, Baldwin) 17th in '99

14) Patrick Bringardner(12, Gettysburg) 15th in '99

15) Neil Galauski (12, Central Bucks East), 61st in '99

(Again, these are only predictions, and only in fun, but these were the returnees and track standouts who performed really well at the state meets last year, and should contend for the top. And for those not on the list, it should provide the fuel to show everyone that you belong at the top of the state rankings. So good luck to all in the upcoming season!)
