Eleanor Roosevelt senior Jessica DeFrietas and High Point junior Dwight Thomas were in Maryland state record range in the 55 meter dashes, with handheld times of 6.9 and 6.1 Wednesday night in the 4A-3A West regional at Baltimore.
The state records, which are maintained only for the state championship finals, are automatic timed 7.14 for girls and handheld 6.0 for boys. The girls record is held by DeFrietas' illustrious predecessors at Eleanor Roosevelt - Amber and Ebony Robinson - along with a handheld 6.9 by Mechelle Lewis of Oxon Hill. DeFrietas and Thomas led their schools to easy victories in the team scoring.
Thomas doubled in the 55 meter hurdles with a record threatening 7.2h (7.49). Northern Calvert junior Chris Parsons threw the shot 52-6 and Largo senior Ickey Chuku high jumped 6-6. Westminster senior Jason Santucci doubled in the 1600 (4:39.5) and 3200 (10:08.6).
In the girls pole vault, K. C. Allen was above state record range with a PR 11-4.5. Allen's 10-6 last year is the existing state indoor record for the event, which is in its third year in Maryland. Suitland junior Schnavia Felder doubled in the 300 (42.7) and 500 (1:22.4).
The slippery wood floor of the Baltimore Armory killed times in the oval races. Northwestern-PG boys, whose 3:21.53 4x400 took a temporary US lead in January at Virginia Tech, settled for 3:33.3, cruising on a big lead after the start of the third lap. Eleanor Roosevelt won the girls 4x200 and 4x400 relays in 1:46.1 and 4:13.8.
