The boys championship came down to the last race of the last night of the state meet, with Duval matched against Woodlawn, which was 0.25 points ahead.  Duval took the lead on the second leg of the 4x400 relay and continued on for first place (3:34.6), clinching the title, 60-58.25. 

Senior Dwayne Vaughan led the winners with a 6.3h victory in the 55 meters and a tie with teammate Curtis Alderman for the 300 meter gold in 38.0h. 

In girls competition, Ed Bowie's perennial power Central returned to the winner's circle with 51 points, outdistancing River Hill 41, Thomas Johnson 40, and North Hagerstown 37.  The winners were led by golds from jr Chanelle Simmons in the 300 meters (42.3h), sr Lakesha Barnaby in the 55m hurdles (8.2h), and the 4x200 relay team (1:46.7 state 2A record). 

River Hill so Lee McDuff doubled in the 1600 (5:25.7) and 3200 (11:51.3) and was a close second in the 800 to Walter Johnson jr Jenny Bodine (2:27.1 to 2:28.2).   North Hagerstown's powerful shotputters were 1-2-7, led by sr Meagan Verdeyen's all-class meet record 42-2.75.  Leonardtown sr Marsha Day became the fourth Maryland 10-foot pole vaulter of the meet with her winning 10-1 mark.
