Kyle Farmer emerged as the next superstar of Maryland high school track with a four-gold performance. Oakland Mills needed every step of Farmer's power to eke out a 1-point victory over Middletown, 62-61.
Entering the closing 4x400 relay, Oakland Mills trailed Middletown by 8 points. But Oakland Mills was top seeded in the relay and Middletown was seeded 7th. Running in the next to last section, Middletown got third, which turned out enough for the sixth place point, so Oakland Mills had to win the relay. In the seeded heat, Oakland Mills trailed Surrattsville and Fairmont Heights until Farmer's anchor leg. Content to stalk the leaders the first time around the Armory oval, Farmer turned on the power as the last lap started, caught the leaders on the backstretch, and surged to victory at the finish line.
This was a reprise of the 4x200 relay an hour earlier. Farmer also won the 300 meters in class 1A record time, 36.6h, and the 55 meters (6.5h) to match his 4-gold performance in last May's outdoor state meet.
Middletown winners were soph Greg McCormick in high jump (6-2), Ryan Moore in the 3200 (10:20.9), and the 4x800 relay (8:48.7).
Glenelg ran away with the girls title, 69-43 over Middletown, getting golds from the 4x200 (1:54.2) and 4x400 (4:24.1) relay teams, sr Blair Henke in the 3200 (12:12.9), and sr Lori Tvarkunas in pole vault (10-6). Tvarkunas set a new class 1A record, and second place Natalie Dye's 10-0 vault was a new class 2A record.
Fairmont Heights sr Shamika Griffin doubled in the 300 (42.5) and 500 (1:20.3)
