Boys

Franklin Central claims first IHSAA cross country title

Led by individual winner Aaron Fisher, Franklin Central cruised to its first team championship
in the 53rd Annual IHSAA Boys Country State Finals on the Indiana University course in
Bloomington. Franklin Central totaled 71 points to 135 for runner-up Portage.  

Fisher became the first individual champion from the winning team since Valparaiso's
Don Vandrey in 1966. Fisher covered the 5,000-meter course in 15:30.5, while Martinsville
senior Andrew Russell was second in 15:32.7. Defending champion Bart Phariss of
North Central (Indianapolis) was sixth in 15:48.1.  

Andrew Russell of Martinsville was named the 1998 recipient of the Charles F. Maas
Mental Attitude Award in Boys Cross Country. Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate
partner, presented a $1,000 scholarship in the name of Russell to Martinsville High School.

Girls

Westfield wins first IHSAA state championship

 

Westfield outran Hamilton County rival Carmel 116-136 to win its first IHSAA state
championship in any sport in the 18th Annual IHSAA Girls Country State Finals on the
Indiana University course in Bloomington.

 Senior Amanda Bell of Clarksville claimed the individual title by outpacing senior
Dawn Boggs of Columbus East with a winning time of 14:15.6. Bell is the first girl
from Clarksville to win a cross country state championship.

Defending state champion Nicole Williams of Westview took eighth in 14:29.3 and
was named the 1998 recipient of the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in Girls Cross
Country. Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented a $1,000
scholarship in the name of Williams to Westview High School.
