Kentucky Cross Country 2001

KTCCCA Meet of Champions

10/20/01 at Cave Lake Park, Wayne County KY - 5k

from a Kentucky correspondent

The meet annually has been a state preview meet hosted at the Kentucky Horse Park, site of the state championships. due to a Three Day Event conflict at the Horse Park, the meet had to be moved to Cave Lake Park in Wayne County. Due to the change in location, participation was down 30% but that did not lower the intensity of the competition on a warm fall day.

Defending State champions Suzanne Cooney(Paul Dunbar AAA), Jackie Wagner(St. Mary A) and Alex Brey(Kentucky Country Day A) ruled the day in their respective races. Defending state champions Frankfort girls(Class A) edged Hancock Co 49-50 while Daviess County won AAA boys with 72 points with
Defending state champion splitting their squad and finishing 2nd & 3rd. Combining South Oldham's top finishers would have had them scoring 40 points.

The new park features the athletes "tent city" with the "Avenue of Champions" running down the middle to "Cross Country Square" with "streets" off the avenue with regular street signs such as "Stretch St.", "Tempo Street", "Interval St." where each team has an assigned location. A ferry transported athletes, coaches and fans back & forth across the lake from the start to the finish. Awards were presented on an island in the lake. Limestone boulders line the shore of the lake near the island for photographers to take pictures of the awards presentations. Spectators could view 75% of the race from the hillside next to the finish line. The concession area is under roof with tables and chairs in the lodge. Timers time from the 3rd level balcony of the lodge with a perfect view of the finish line with the computer headquarters on the second level right below.
