(BALTIMORE) --
Palos Verdes High School rising senior Whitney Liehr took second place in the Young Women's Heptathlon at the USATF National Championships in Baltimore, Md, this week, scoring an impressive 4,723 points in the two-day challenge. Her marks in each of the seven scoring events were: 14.98 seconds in the 100m hurdles; 5 feet, 3 inches in the high jump; 27'5" in the shotput; 26.54 seconds in the 200m; 18'2" in the long jump, 105'6" in the javelin, and 2:26 in the 800. Her 100m hurdles mark was the fastest of the competition, giving her the early lead, and at the end of the first day she stood in third place before moving into a second-place finish on the second day in large part due to a very strong effort in her marquee event, the long jump.
Said PVHS Head Track & Field Coach Renee Capozzola, "I am very impressed, but not at all surprised, by Whitney's outstanding performance in the heptathlon at USATF Nationals. In fact, before the season even started I had told her mother about the possibility that Whitney might be a heptathlete in college!
"All season long she was one of California's best hurdlers and jumpers, and it is rewarding to see her put all of her athletic talents to use in the heptathlon. We are looking forward to more great things from her in her senior year."
