State's Best All-Arounder in Half a Century since Bob Mathias (Tulare)
won Olympic Decathlon
as 17 year old High Schooler in 1948 and Rafer Johnson (Kingsburg) from
1954. Mathias won HH and IH
in 1948 state meet and was 4th in SP, then won Olympics that summer!
Johnson took state HH & LH titles
& was #6 LJer in US in 1954; also took third in 1954 AAU Sr Decathlon.
He went on to win Gold Medal in
1960 Olympics in Rome. Dixon Farmer (Current Occidental College Athletic
Director) at Miramonte HS in
Orinda recorded the #3 prep decathlon score ever (behind famed Milt
Campbell, won won the 1952 Olympic
Decathlon as a HS Junior and Mathias) in 1958 was nationally ranked
in the 400 (48.2), HH, LH
(19.0 180LH in those days) & LJ (23-06).... THE NEW MILLENIUM'S

"Cinco De Mile" Event
To Benefit L.A. Area Youth!
What: A one-mile race
Where: Placita Olvera, downtown Los Angeles on Olvera
St.
When: Sunday, May 1st at 8am
Reasons to Run:
- Chance to meet Nike athletes (names will be released later)
- Participants receive a FREE Nike limited edition t-shirt
- Finishers receive a FREE Nike dogtag finishers prize
- Listen to a live band during the course
- Free post-race food provided for participants
- Live post-race concert featuring Pitbull and Nina Sky
Only $2 (age 18 & under) to enter
and all entry fees support L.A physical activity programs thru NikeGO.
Race day Schedule:
7am - Arrive at Placita Olvera & pick up T-shirt
8am - Warm-up
