Week of 10/17 thru 10/21/05
Doug Speck

With many of the State’s top teams and individuals heading to the Clovis Invitational on the popular Woodward Park State Meet course this past weekend, our State Athletes of the Week came from that gathering.

Girls Athlete of the Week

Brittany Morreale (Peninsula, Rolling Hills Estates) - Southern Section

Part of the super group of female runners statewide for the 2005 harrier season, South Bay star Brittany Morreale has had a super last two years of running, with this past weekend a big win at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational, an 18:15 run in leading her team to a fine 32 point total and Division I title! Brittany returned for this fall’s season with a sterling record, finishing third in the State Division I contest last November in the fall sport, and eleventh in the spring track and field championships over 3200m, with a best of 10:44.02. Brittany earlier this fall finished seventh in both the Woodbridge and Stanford Invitational seeded events, racing 17:14 under the lights in the Orange County Meet, and she was the fifth California finisher at Stanford, racing a fine 18:28 for the challenging course there!

From a program with great tradition, we can certainly expect Brittany to challenge the top end of all of her competitions up through and including the national level affairs closing down the sport in two months!!

Boys Athlete of the Week

Julian DeRubira (Santa Margarita, Rancho SM) - Southern Section

With the last weekend the Orange County championships, that brings together athletes from one of the most competitive areas of the state, Julian DeRubira impressed with his win over a fine field on the Irvine Park course at 15:00. A fine returnee from last year, Julian led his team into the State Cross Country meet where they finished in ninth, with a strong spring track 4:18.92/9:24.24 distance double in Southern Section Divisional action in May! After finishing fourth in the competitive Southern Section Bronco Invitational in early September, Julian has rolled to six consecutive wins on courses in the area! We are looking for a fine close over the next month and a half to another fine star out of Orange County, Julian DeRubira!!
