DyeStatCal Cross-Country Athletes of the Week
Week of 10/10 thru 10/14/05
Doug Speck

With many of the State’s top teams and individuals heading to the Clovis Invitational on the popular Woodward Park State Meet course this past weekend, our State Athletes of the Week came from that gathering.

Girls Athlete of the Week

Annie St. Geme (Corona del Mar, Newport Beach) - Southern Section

As the leader of one of the nation’s top teams, Annie emerged as one of the top individuals in the nation also off her big effort this past weekend at Clovis. She finished second to Marie Lawrence (Reno, Nevada) in an excellent 17:24, making her the #4 female individual ever in the early October Clovis contest. The mark is among the top twenty-five female efforts for all grades, and among the top twenty twelfth graders on the course well-tested by top athletes in late-season State meet affairs, and in the old qualifier for the Foot Locker/Kinney series. Annie helped Coach Bill Sumner’s team to a new Woodward Park Course team time mark of 91:21 during an amazing day for the school!

Annie really blossomed last track season, with a State title in the 1600 at 4:50.40, and great anchor efforts for 20:20.38 four mile and 12:42.07 distance medley relay groups, both the first high school team finishers in the Nike Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina last June.

With Coach Sumner masterful in his preparation of teen-age distance runners, Annie is one of those athletes who has a chance to help her team compete at the Nike Team Championships, then move on individually to the Foot Locker Nationals as an individual not too far from her hometown in San Diego. It should be a great close to the Fall harrier season, then on to another great track season.

Boys Athlete of the Week

Michael Cybulski (Royal, Simi Valley) - Southern Section

Our Boy honoree is another leader of one of the nation’s top teams, with Royal, #4 ranked nationally at the end of the 2004 season, off to another super Fall season, with a #3 ranking early in the 2005 campaign! Eleventh grader Michael Cybulski handles the lead job well, with a fine 15:20 win at the Clovis meet, among the top fifteen times ever recorded in the early October affair.

Michael was an important part of the super successful 2004 Royal squad in the Fall, placing 15th in the State meet Division I contest, and 23rd in the Nike Team Nationals affair. In Track he steadily progressed, shocking with a big final half lap in the State Meet to win the 3200 over Mark Matusak with a super 9:02.57 clocking. Cybulski has accelerated into his 2005 Fall, with a 14:40 for seventh in the super Woodbridge field, and fifth at Stanford in the Sweeps event there at 15:31 prior to his big Woodward Park run in the Clovis Meet.

Michael Cybulski has emerged as a super leader of a group that has so far proven the best in the state in any division so far this Fall, with some individual and team glory down the road through December we are sure for this talented Simi Valley area star!
