Brad Peters catches Jordan Hasay off to the races in the
Morro Bay Invitational - second place a ways back at 1.5 miles already!

Jordan Hasay (Mission Prep, San Luis Obispo) - Central Section

In one of the most monumental starts to a prep career and season ever, the frosh star from Mission Prep, which is in San Luis Obispo, but will compete in the Central Section, exploded in the annual low key Morro Bay Invitational in style that more than surpassed the expectations that anyone would have had for the talented lass early in the season.

Hasay’s domination of a good field with her 18:01 run on the Morro Bay HS course, which meanders out onto the beach there, was quite staggering. Co-editor Rich Gonzalez put it all in place when he explained that her run, within 50 seconds of Colin Hacker’s winning Boys’ time (remember Colin was 15:45 at the State meet Div III for 5th place and a 4:20.59 1600 star in track), is a margin of difference between a Boys and Girls Varsity winning time in a respectable meet that is unheard of. We will let you do the math in comparing Jordan’s Morro Bay effort with possibilities at Woodward Park. Jordan did leave some very good girls far behind in her Morro Bay win, with second place finisher Hannah Huff (Paso Robles), an 11:13.5 3200 runner, at 20:19.

Jordan completed this summer a fabled age-group career at the Junior Olympic level, taking the Youth Girls 4k event last December in Cross Country by 24 seconds on a mid-30 degree day with winds and a course slowed by rain the previous day. She has taken the last two Youth Girl 1500 and 3000 meter championships at the Summer JO Nationals in Track and Field, with her 9:35.12 3k track best the #2 time run by a US student up through the twelfth grade (Nicole Blood of New York raced 9:29.44 this past spring). She has developed a following at the national level already, with her Junior Olympic efforts the last two years, where the long blond-tailed (she has never cut her hair) dynamo powers along ahead of the pack, gradually gathering support from the thousands in attendance who watch amazed at her margin of domination with the eventual realization of record possibilities. The last athlete we saw have that much fan appeal at the National Junior Olympic level was famed Obea Moore, who had about every record in every event he competed in while at the age-group level.

It is going to be a great four year run, with a super start for this week’s DyeStatCal Athlete of the Week, Jordan Hasay.

Boys Athlete of the Week

Chad Hall (Big Bear) - Southern Section

A fine eleventh grader from the 7000 foot high city of Big Bear in the Southern Section, Chad had a super sophomore year, with a runner-up performance in the State Division III run in the Fall in the rain at Woodward, then raced 9:18.85 for 3200m during the spring track season. He was the Southern Section Champ in the Fall for his division, and was a Section Finalist in the spring at the Division IV level of the Southern Section over 1600m.

His 2005 junior year Cross Country start was an impressive one at the Long Beach Invitational September 10th, with a “fastest of day” on the Heartwell Park course, taking the eleventh grade division contest with a fine 14:56. His clocking was the #3 eleventh grade time in the history of the meet, and he did indicate after that he had been a bit sick the week before that he felt held him back a tad, but was happy with the performance. He looked in control during the run, racing the final part of the event way out in front and looked strong through to the finish.

Chad has picked up a ton of solid big-meet experience during his first two years of high school, and sits as an eleventh grader where many athletes are as seniors in feeling comfortable in top, championship level competition. He indicated a goal for this season is to qualify for nationals, and his Big Bear teammates look to be a very fine group who should be in it with Chad until the end of the regular season. There are a couple of items left unfinished, with Chad certainly interested in a State individual championship in the fall harrier sport, after his runner-up performance last year there. Erick Garcia of Parlier will head a solid Division IV group of individuals who will keep Chad honest on the way to that title. We are sure he has hopes of joining the usual top group of Southern Section distance runners in the spring all the way to the deepest championship level there, with 2004 featuring a fine regular season, but an end in the Divisional Track Finals at the local section level.

With this and next year at the prep level, we are sure there is a ton more to be heard of from this underclass Southern Section star.
