It's Daina, please, not Diana
Daina Pucurs' mom, Wendy, sent this message on Daina's birthday Monday June 21 about her daughter's often misspelled name:
"It's easy to see how Daina's name can be mistaken for "Diana" as it only involves switching the "ai" to "ia." Actually, when she was born 18 years ago today, we weren't just being "cute" or different by spelling her name the way we did. My husband's family is originally from Latvia (one of the Baltic states near Sweden that was occupied by the Soviets for nearly 50 years) (though he grew up in Australia due to his parents' fleeing from the Soviets) and "Daina" is a popular Latvian name for girls. They pronounce it "Dy-na," so half of our family [my half] calls her "Day-na" and the other half [his] calls her "Dy-na!!!"
